Overview

The Endress+Hauser Proline t-mass 300 HART is a functional safety manual for a flow measuring device, designed for use in safety-relevant applications. This document outlines the device's characteristics, safety functions, and procedures for commissioning, operation, proof testing, and maintenance, all in accordance with IEC 61508.

Function Description

The Proline t-mass 300 HART is a flow measuring device that generates an analog signal (4-20 mA) proportional to the flow. This signal is sent to a downstream automation system, which monitors it to determine whether it falls below or exceeds a specified limit value. The safety function of the device is mass flow monitoring. For fault monitoring, the logic unit recognizes both high alarms (≥ 21 mA) and low alarms (≤ 3.6 mA). The device is designed to be used in protective systems, ensuring reliable and safe operation in industrial environments.

The device incorporates a safety-related output signal, which is a 4 to 20 mA (output: input 1) signal. It is designed to detect failure currents of ≥ 3.6 mA or ≥ 21 mA. The device monitors mass flow for gaseous media and can operate in either Low Demand Mode or High Demand Mode, with continuous mode also available. The valid hardware version is from delivery date 31.07.2020, and the valid firmware version is 01.00.zz and higher (HART; from delivery date July 31, 2020).

The device's safety function is triggered when the measured flow rate deviates from the value specified in the Operating Instructions. An incorrect output signal that deviates from the value specified in the Operating Instructions but is still in the range of 4 to 20 mA is considered a dangerous, undetected failure. The device is designed to prevent such failures or to detect them promptly.

The device also communicates via HART or WirelessHART in the SIL mode, providing additional device information. The safety-related output signal is the 4-20 mA analog output signal (output; input 1). When the SIL locking code is entered, the device parameters that affect the safety-related output signal are locked and write-protected. This is to prevent unauthorized changes to critical safety parameters.

Usage Features

The device is designed for easy commissioning and configuration. The commissioning process involves setting up the measurement mode, gas mixture, current span, and failure mode. Users can choose between single gas or gas mixture, and define the current output range (e.g., 4-20 mA or 4-20 mA NAMUR). The failure mode can be set to Min. or Max.

The device also allows for low flow cut-off settings and sensor adjustments, including pipe inner diameter and pipe shape. An "Expert" menu provides access to advanced settings such as zero point adjustment, in-situ adjustment, sensor adjustment, and measurement mode. The SIL confirmation sequence is only visible on the local display and in the operating tools for devices with the order code for "Additional approval", option LA "SIL".

To ensure safety, the device features a write protection switch (WP) in the connection compartment. This switch, when set to the ON position, enables hardware write protection. The SIL locking code (7452) must be entered to lock safety-related parameters, making them write-protected. This prevents accidental or unauthorized changes to critical settings.

The diagnostic behavior of the device is set to a safe state when an error occurs. Diagnostic messages are displayed, and the current output adopts the configured failsafe mode. Examples of diagnostic messages include "834 Process temperature too high," "835 Process temperature too low," and "AS976 Mass flow out of calibrated range."

Maintenance Features

Maintenance of the Proline t-mass 300 HART involves several aspects, including repair and disposal. Endress+Hauser provides spare parts for the device, and information on these parts can be found in the Operating Instructions. Components that may be repaired or replaced by the customer's technical staff include the sensor, transmitter without a sensor, display module, power unit, main electronics module, sensor electronics module (ISEM), I/O modules, terminals, connection compartment cover, electronics compartment cover, seal sets for electronics compartment cover, securing clamps for electronics compartment cover, and cable glands.

For detailed information on maintenance, users should refer to the Operating Instructions. Alternative monitoring measures must be taken to ensure process safety during configuration, proof-testing, and maintenance work on the device.

The device also supports Heartbeat Verification, which is a method for detecting systematic errors within the context of proof testing. Heartbeat Verification is based on device-specific test sequences that are performed automatically. It helps in identifying systematic errors in the sensor and ensures the device's continued reliability.

Proof testing is a crucial part of maintenance, designed to verify the safety function of the device. The manual outlines several test sequences:

  • Test sequence A (PTC = 99 %): Testing with a secondary standard (mass flow) and verification of current output 1.
  • Test sequence C (PTC = 98 %): Testing with a secondary standard (mass flow) and inspection and on-site visual check.
  • Test sequence D (PTC = 36 %): Device restart (verification of RAM memory), verification of current output 1, Heartbeat Verification, and inspection and on-site visual check.
  • Test sequence E (PTC = 19 %): Device restart (verification of RAM memory), Heartbeat Verification, and inspection and on-site visual check.
  • Test sequence F (PTC = 0 %): Heartbeat Verification and inspection and on-site visual check.

These test sequences ensure that the device's safety function is maintained over its lifetime. The individual proof test coverages (PTC) are calculated based on the specified test sequences. If no operator-specific proof testing requirements have been defined, the following is a possible alternative for testing the transmitter depending on the measured variable used for the safety function.

Disposal of the device must be done in accordance with IEC 61508-1:2010 Section 7.17. Users should refer to the Operating Instructions for detailed information on device disposal.
