EXE Connections and Configurations
The following steps should be observed when setting up the EXE.
Power Supply Connection:
The power supply comes with an external power switch mounted on a 1RU panel.
There is one switch for the power supplies at the top of the frame and one switch for the supplies at the
bottom of the frame. When the switch is in the Off position all the power modules will be shutdown,
and when the switch is returned to the On position it will cause the power modules to power back up.
Each switch has a mating cable, with four alarm connectors. The alarm connectors are required for the
power tray to current share and therefore must be plugged into the back of each operating power supply
tray.
First, connect an Ethernet cable from the Control Network to the front of the PSU unit. Use a web
browser to open the Power Supply Unit (PSU) web interface, login with username Admin and password
exeadmin. By default each PSU’s IP is set to 192.168.0.230.

Overview

The Evertz EXE is a modular routing platform designed for high-bandwidth applications, primarily focused on video and audio signal distribution. It features a system controller (EXE-NCS-A) and frame controllers (EXE-FC) that manage the routing and network interconnectivity. The device is designed for robust operation, with redundant power supplies and network connections to ensure high availability.

Function Description:

The Evertz EXE system acts as a central hub for routing various signals within a broadcast or production environment. The EXE-NCS-A serves as the main system controller, providing the user interface and overall management of the frame. The EXE-FC units are responsible for the actual signal routing and processing. The system supports a wide range of signal types and bandwidths, including 1GE and 10GE connections, making it suitable for modern IP-based workflows.

The power supply system is designed for reliability, featuring external power switches mounted on a 1RU panel. There are separate switches for the top and bottom power supplies of the frame. These switches control the power modules, allowing for graceful shutdown and power-up. Each switch has a mating cable with four alarm connectors, which are crucial for the power trays to share current effectively. These alarm connectors must be plugged into the back of each operating power supply tray.

The system's network configuration is flexible, allowing for management via a web interface or command-line interface. This enables administrators to set IP addresses, netmasks, and gateways to integrate the EXE into existing network infrastructures. The system also supports NTP for clock synchronization, ensuring accurate timing across all connected devices.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: The system uses 48V power supplies. Each power supply unit (PSU) has a web interface accessible via an Ethernet connection, with a default IP address of 192.168.0.230.
  • Network Connectivity:
    • EXE-NCS-A: Features Control ports (1GE RJ-45 SFP), FC CFG A/B ports (1GE RJ-45 SFP), and 10GE SFP1/2 ports.
    • EXE-FC: Features 1GE RJ-45 SFP ports and 10GE SFP ports.
  • SFP Types:
    • EXE-NCS-A 10GE ports: MO-10GE-SFP-10KM
    • EXE-FC 10GE ports: SFP10G-TR13-A
    • EXE-FC 1GE ports: SFPTR-RJ45-SER-AV
  • Transceiver Types: Supports both Optical (fiber cables) and DAC (copper cables) for port configurations.
  • TX/RX Power Levels: For healthy SFP operation, TX power should be between -8.2 dBm and +0.5 dBm, and RX power should be between -10 dBm and +0.5 dBm.
  • Genlock Reference: The system can detect line rates for NTSC (15.734 kHz), PAL (15.625 kHz), and higher frequency line rates for HD formats.

Usage Features:

  • Web Interface Management: The EXE-NCS-A and PSU units offer web-based interfaces for configuration and monitoring. This allows for remote management of IP settings, firmware upgrades, and system status checks.
  • Command Line Interface (CLI): For advanced users, the NCS Host provides a CLI for detailed network configuration and troubleshooting using commands like netsetup, ifconfig, ip route, and checklinks.
  • Modular Design: The system is designed with modular components, including rectifiers in shelves, allowing for scalability and easy replacement of parts.
  • Guest/Host System: The NCS operates with a Host and Guest system. The Host manages the overall NCS unit, while the Guest runs the routing application. Firmware images can be loaded and managed for the Guest.
  • Card Settings: Users can enable or disable individual blades (cards) within the frame through the Guest interface, optimizing resource allocation and power consumption.
  • Port Configuration: Ports can be configured for specific transceiver types (Optical or DAC) and speeds (1GE/10GE) to match the connected cables and devices.
  • NCS Index: Each NCS unit has an index (0 for main control, 1 for redundant control), which is crucial for proper redundant operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Power Supply Monitoring: The PSU web interface allows users to verify system voltage (should be 48V) and monitor current consumption of individual rectifiers. Similar current consumptions across rectifiers in a shelf indicate proper current sharing. If not, the current sharing cable should be checked.
  • Alarm Monitoring: The system provides an "Alarms" section in the web interface to display system status (e.g., "System Normal") and log events, aiding in proactive issue detection.
  • Firmware Upgrades: Firmware for the NCS Host and Guest can be upgraded via the web interface by selecting an upgrade file.
  • Troubleshooting Tools:
    • checklinks command: Used via SSH to the NCS guest to verify all links between the NCS and FCs are properly connected. It provides detailed messages if links are down or swapped.
    • LED Indicators: LED lights on the back of the NCS indicate the status of 1GE and 10GE links, helping to quickly identify physical connection issues.
    • SFP Diagnostics: The Guest web interface provides "TX power level" and "RX power level" readings for SFPs, allowing users to diagnose faulty SFPs based on power output.
    • ./ref script: Used on the FC to verify genlock reference status and detected line rates, crucial for proper video switching.
  • Redundancy: The system supports redundant NCS units and power supplies, enhancing system reliability and allowing for continued operation in case of a component failure.
  • Port Status: The Guest webpage allows users to check and adjust port operation (Up/Down) and speed settings, which are critical for resolving "Port down" issues.
  • Reboot Functionality: The system can be rebooted from the NCS host terminal to apply network changes or resolve software-related issues.
