A. CreosoteFormation–Whenanywoodisburnedslowly,itproducestarandotherorganicvapors,
whichcombinewithexpelledmoisturetoformcreosote.Thecreosotevaporscondenseinthe
relativelycoolchimneyflueoranewlystartedfireorfromaslow‐burningfire.Asaresult,
creosoteresidueaccumulatesonthefluelining.Whenignited,thiscreosotemakesanextremely
hotfire,whichmaydamagethechimneyorevendestroythehouse.Despitetheirhighefficiency,
pelletstovescanaccumulatecreosoteundercertainconditions.
B. SootandFlyAsh:FormationandNeedforRemoval‐Theproductsofcombustionwillcontain
smallparticlesofflyash.Theflyashwillcollectintheexhaustventingsystemandrestrictthe
flowofthefluegases.Incompletecombustion,suchasoccursduringstartup,shutdown,or
incorrectoperationoftheroomheaterwillleadtosomesootformationwhichwillcollectinthe
exhaustventingsystem.Theexhaustventingsystemshouldbeinspectedatleastonceeveryyear
ortonofpelletsburnedtodetermineifcleaningisnecessary.
C. InspectionandRemoval–Thechimneyconnectorandchimneyshouldbeinspectedannuallyor
pertontodetermineifacreosoteorflyashbuild‐uphasoccurred.Ifcreosotehasaccumulated,it
shouldberemovedtoreducetheriskofachimneyfire.Inspectthesystematthestove
connectionandatthechimneytop.Coolersurfacestendtobuildcreosotedepositsquicker,soit
isimportanttocheckthechimneyfromthetopaswellasfromthebottom.
Thecreosoteshouldberemovedwithabrushspecificallydesignedforthetypeofchimneyinuse.A
qualifiedchimneysweepcanperformthisservice.Itisalsorecommendedthatbeforeeachheating
seasontheentiresystembeprofessionallyinspected,cleanedand,ifnecessary,repaired.
Tocleanthechimney,detachtheventatthecombustionblowertransitionwhereitisattachedtothe
blower.
