8. Remove hardware retaining deck
mounting pins and remove pins. See
Figure 54.
9. Remove deck.
Install Deck

1. Position deck under unit.
2. Align mounting arms with deck and
reinstall mounting pins. Secure each
mounting pin with one tapping screw.
3. Secure deck lift links to deck with original
hardware.
4. Raise deck to highest cutting height.
5. Models 988172, 988173, 988174 Only:
Reconnect lift-assist springs to spring
anchors.
6. Reinstall PTO belt onto clutch. See Install
PTO Belt on page 29.
7. Level the deck. See Level and Pitch
Mower Deck on page 33.
LEVEL AND PITCH MOWER
DECK
Models 988172, 988173, 988174
IMPORTANT: Make sure unit is on a flat,
level surface and that tires are inflated to the
recommended pressures.
Check Blade Level and Pitch
1. Place unit in service position. See
Service Position on page 18.
2. Raise deck to 8.3 cm (3 1/4") cutting
height.
See Figure 56.
3. Position mower blades so ends point left
to right across the width of the deck.
4. Measure the distance between the
ground and the cutting edge of the left
and right blades. If the measurements are
not within 4.7 mm (3/16") of each other,
level the deck. See Level Mower Deck on
page 34.
