Do you have a question about the Grizzly G0893 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Grizzly G0893 is a 6" benchtop jointer with a helical cutterhead, designed for woodworking tasks such as squaring stock, surface planing, edge jointing, and bevel cutting. Its primary function is to create flat and parallel surfaces on wood, preparing workpieces for further processing with other tools like thickness planers and table saws.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 1-1/2 HP, 110V, single-phase, 60 Hz, 12 Amps.
  • Cutterhead: Helical type, 1-7/8" diameter, with 3 rows of 18 indexable carbide inserts (total 18 inserts).
  • Cutterhead Speed: 8000 RPM, resulting in 24,000 cuts per minute.
  • Cutter Insert Size: 15 x 15 x 2.5mm.
  • Maximum Depth of Cut: 1/8".
  • Maximum Width of Cut: 6".
  • Minimum Workpiece Size: 8" long, 3/4" wide, 1/2" thick.
  • Tables: 30-3/8" long x 6-1/4" wide, 1" thick, with an 8-1/4" floor to table height.
  • Fence: 22-1/2" long x 13/16" wide x 4-1/4" high, with stops at 45°, 90°, and 135° (45° outward).
  • Dust Port: 2-1/2" diameter, with one port.
  • Weight: 50 lbs.
  • Construction: Pre-formed steel body, extruded aluminum fence, aluminum guard and table, powder-coated finish.
  • Power Cord: 16G 3W 72" 5-15P.
  • Warranty: 1 Year.
  • Certifications: ISO 9001 Factory, NRTL certified.

Usage Features:

The G0893 is equipped with several features to facilitate its operation. The infeed table adjustment knob allows for precise control over the depth of cut. The cutterhead guard covers the cutterhead until pushed aside by the workpiece, springing back to its original position for safety. The fence supports the workpiece laterally and determines the angle of cut for edge or bevel jointing, with a fence tilt lock lever to secure its angle and fence stops for quick setting to 45° inward, 90°, and 45° outward (135°). A limit block and limit plate further aid in setting preset fence angles. The ON/OFF switch with a disabling key prevents unauthorized use. Grab handles are provided for portability, and aluminum tables feature a low-friction coating. The machine includes a built-in dust collection system that can operate standalone with the included chip collection bag or connect to an external dust collector/shop vacuum. Push blocks are also included for safe workpiece feeding.

When squaring stock, the process involves surface planing on the jointer, surface planing on a thickness planer, edge jointing on the jointer, and rip cutting on a table saw. For surface planing, the workpiece's concave side should face the table and fence, and push blocks must always be used to keep hands at least 4" away from the cutterhead. The maximum cutting depth for surface planing is 1/16" per pass. Edge jointing follows similar safety and feeding guidelines, with the workpiece firmly against the fence and infeed table. Bevel cutting involves tilting the fence to the desired angle (e.g., 45°) and feeding the workpiece with firm pressure, again using push blocks.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and safety.

  • Cleaning: The machine should be regularly vacuumed to remove wood chips and sawdust, and unpainted cast-iron surfaces should be wiped clean and protected with a metal protectant (e.g., G96® Gun Treatment, SLIPIT®, or Boeshield® T-9) after each use to prevent rust. Resin buildup can be removed with a resin dissolving cleaner.
  • Lubrication: While bearings are sealed and permanently lubricated, the leadscrew for infeed table adjustment requires light machine oil as needed, with excess oil and sawdust wiped away. Fence pivot points also benefit from a drop or two of light machine oil. Components should be cleaned before lubrication to prevent dust and chips from building up.
  • Cutterhead Insert Rotation/Replacement: The helical cutterhead uses 4-sided indexable carbide inserts. If an edge becomes dull or damaged, the insert can be rotated 90° to use a fresh cutting edge. A reference dot on each insert helps track used edges. When all four edges are used, the insert should be replaced. This process involves disconnecting power, removing the cutterhead guard and lowering the infeed table, removing the cabinet bottom access panel, rotating the cutterhead pulley for access, removing the Torx screw and insert, cleaning the insert pocket, re-installing a sharp insert (or new insert), lubricating the Torx screw threads, and torquing the screw to 48–50 inch/pounds.
  • Belt Tensioning/Replacement: The machine uses two V-belts: one for the cutterhead drive (P0893072) and one for the fan (P0893091). Belt tension should be checked monthly, with the cutterhead belt having approximately 1/4" deflection when pressed. If a belt is damaged or worn, it should be replaced. This involves disconnecting power, removing the motor cover, and adjusting or replacing the belt as needed.
  • Adjusting Infeed Table Parallelism: Although factory-set, the infeed table parallelism may need adjustment over time. This involves placing a straightedge on the outfeed table and adjusting the infeed table until it is parallel, then loosening cap screws and rotating set screws beneath each corner of the table in small increments to raise or lower it.
  • Replacing Motor Brushes: The universal motor uses carbon brushes that wear out over time. If motor performance issues arise, the brushes should be inspected and replaced if worn to less than 3/32" in length. This involves disconnecting power, tipping the jointer, removing the motor cover, unscrewing brush caps, measuring brush wear, inserting new brush assemblies, and re-installing the cover.
  • Fence Stop Adjustment: The 90° and 45° fence stops can be adjusted for precision. This involves loosening the fence tilt lock, using a square to set the desired angle, and adjusting the limit block shaft or inward/outward stop bolts, then re-tightening.

Safety is paramount, and users are warned to always disconnect power before adjustments or service, wear eye and hearing protection, use push blocks, and ensure all guards are in place and functioning. The manual emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding all instructions before operating the machine.
