Why does my Grizzly G0645 Power Tool mortising bit smoke and burn the workpiece?
J

The mortising bit may smoke and burn the workpiece due to several reasons. The drill bit might be dull, so you should sharpen or replace the drill bit and chisel. Your drilling pressure could be too aggressive, causing the drill bit to overheat; in this case, adjust the drill bit depth, reduce drilling pressure, and clear chips often. Wood chips may load up in the chisel, leading to overheating; try applying a small amount of beeswax to the drill bit, face the chisel slot sideways, and clear chips often. The wood might be too green, have high moisture content, or is pressure treated; only mortise dry, untreated wood.

What to do if my Grizzly G0645 Power Tool mortising bit and chisel are noisy, chatter, and smoke?
S
Sabrina BaileyAug 5, 2025
If your mortising bit and chisel are extremely noisy, chatter, and smoke, consider these potential causes. First, the drill bit might be out of alignment with the chisel; try reinstalling the chisel in a different position. Second, the chisel mounting bushing could be loose or damaged, leading to poor drill bit-to-chisel alignment; replace the bushing, being careful not to overtighten the chisel retaining set screw. Third, the chisel or drill bit may be bent; replace the chisel and drill bit as a matched set. Note that some amount of chatter and smoke is normal.

How to fix a Grizzly Power Tool when it's difficult to pull the lever down?
M
Michael MillerAug 14, 2025
If it's difficult to pull the lever down during machine operation, consider the following:
1. The drill bit might not protrude enough from the end of the chisel; adjust the drill bit depth.
2. The chisel or drill bit could be dull; sharpen or replace the drill bit and chisel.
3. The mortising operating handle might not be positioned for maximum leverage; adjust the handle for maximum length and position it so you have the maximum leverage at the most difficult mortising depth.
4. The chisel might be too big for the job; use up to a 1/2" long chisel (maximum).
