Selectinga DigitalSource
lo utilizeeitherdigitalmode,youmusthaveproperly
connecteda digitalsourceto theAVR525 Connect
thedigitaloutputsfromDVDplayers,IdDTVreceivers,
satellitesystemsorCDplayerstotheOpticalor
CoaxialInputs_'F_i"_]_ _ Inordertoprovidea
backupsignalanda sourceforanalogstereorecording,
theanalogoutputsprovidedondigitalsourceequipment
shouldalsobeconnectedto theirappropriateinputson
theAVR525rearpanel(eg, connecttheanalogstereo
audiooutputfroma DVDtotheDVDAudioInputs
ontherearpanelwhenyouconnectthesource'sdigi
taloutputs)
Ifyouhavenotalreadyconfiguredaninputfor adigital
sourceusingtheon-screenmenusasshownon page
20, firstselecttheinputusingtheremoteor front
panelcontrolsasoutlinedinthismanualNext,select
thedigitalsourcebypressingtheDigitalSelect

AVR525 willautomaticallydetectwhichtypeofdigital
datastreamis beingdecodedanddisplaythatinfor
mationintheUpperDisplayLine[].
Digital BitstreamIndicators
Whenadigitalsourceisplaying,theAVR525 senses
thetypeofbitstreamdatathatispresentUsingthis
information,thecorrectsurroundmodewillautomati
callybeselectedForexample,DFSbitstreamswill
causetheunitto switchtoDTSdecoding,andDolby
DigitalbitstreamswillenableDolbyDigitaldecoding
WhentheunitsensesPCMdatafromCDsandLDs,
itwillallowtheappropriatesurroundsourcesto be
selectedmanuallySincetherangeofavailablesur
roundmodesis dependentonthetypeofdigitaldata
thatispresent,theAVR525 usesdisplayindicatorsto
letyouknowwhattypeofsignalispresentlhis will
helpyouto understandthechoiceof modes
lb helpyouseewhichtypeofdigitalsourceisplaying,
theSurroundModeIndicators[] incombination
withtheInformationDisplay[] alsoserveas
bitstreamindicationsto showwhichtypeofbitstream
ispresent,aswellasthesurroundmodein use,if
applicable
DolbyDigital:WhenthegreenLEDnextto theDolby
Digitalor DolbyDigitalEXmodesislit,a DolbyDigital
bitstreamisbeingreceivedDependingonthesettings
onthesourceplayerandspecificsurroundinformation
andnumberofchannelsonthedisc,a numberof sur
roundmodesarepossibleFordiscswithfull51
audio,onlytheDolbyDigitalandVMAxmodesare
available
DTS:WhenthegreenLEDnexttotheDFSlogo
lights,a DIS bitstreamisbeingreceivedWhenthe
unitsensesthistypeofdata,onlytheapplicableDFS
modemaybeused
PCM:WhenthegreenLEDnextto thewordDIGITAL
lights,a standardPulseCodeModulation,orPCM,sig
nalisbeingreceivedlhis isthetypeofdigitalaudio
usedbyconventionalcompactdiscandlaserdisc
recordingsWhena PCMbitstreamis present,all
modesexceptDolbyDigitalandDFSareavailable
HDCD:WhenthelettersHDCD appearonthe
LowerDisplayLine [] inconjunctionwiththePCM
indicator,theCDthatis playingisencodedthroughthe

MP3:WhenMP3 appearsontheLower Display

wasencodedWhena digitalsignalisplaying,thelet
tersintheseindicatorswilllightinresponseto the
specificsignalbeingreceivedItisimporlantto note
thatalthoughDolbyDigital,f(}rexample,isreferredto
asa "51" system,notallDolbyDigitalDVDsor pro
gramsareencodedfor51 lhus,itis sometimesnor
realf(}raDVDwitha DolbyDigitalsoundtracktotrig
geronlythe"L"and"R"indicators
NOTE:ManyDVDdiscsarerecordedwithboth"51"
and"20" versionsofthesamesoundtrackWhen
playinga DVD,alwaysbecerlainto checkthetypeof
materialonthediscMostdiscsshowthisinformation
intheformof a listingoricononthebackof thedisc
jacket,Whena discdoesoffermultiplesoundtrack
choices,youmayhaveto makesomeadjustmentsto
yourDVDplayer(usuallywiththe"AudioSelect"button
orin a menuscreenonthedisc)to sendafull51
feedto theAVR525 Itis alsopossibleforthetypeof
signalfeedto changeduringthecourseofa DVD
playbackInsomecases,thepreviewsof special
materialwillonlyberecordedin20 audio,whilethe
mainfeatureisavailablein51 audiolhe AVR525
willautomaticallysensechangestothebitstreamand
channelcountandreflectthemintheseindicators
lhe lettersusedbytheSpeaker/ChannelInput
Indicators[] alsoflashtoindicatewhena bitstream
hasbeeninterruptedThiswillhappenwhena digital
inputsourceisselectedbeforetheplaybackstarts,or
whena digitalsourcesuchasa DVDis paused]he
flashingindicatorsremindyouthattheplaybackhas
stoppedduetotheabsenceofa digitalsignalandnot
throughanyfaultoftheAVR525 ]his isnormal,and
thedigitalplaybackwillresumeoncetheplaybackis
startedagain
NightMode
AspecialfeatureofDolbyDigitalistheNightmode,
whichenablesspeciallyencodedDolbyDigitalinput
sourcesto beplayedbackwithflJlldigitalintelligibilily
whilereducingtheminimumpeaklevelby 1/4 to 1/3
lhis preventsabruptlyloudtransitionsfromdisturbing
others,withoutreducingtheimpactof thedigital
sourcelhe Nightmodeis availableonlywhenDolby
Digitalsignalswithspecialdataarebeingplayed
