1. After adjusting the width of the bed, a beep continues to sound. Why?

The Compella™ Bed can be adjusted to either 40" or 50". The continuous beep is intended to

alert you the bed is not fully adjusted. Continue to press and hold the “expand” or “retract”

width adjustment until you hear a single beep conﬁrmation. This will let you know the bed is

fully adjusted.

2. Why will the bed width not adjust when I press the “Width Expand” or “Width Retract”

button?

Ensure both power cords for the bed and surface are plugged into the power. Powered width

adjustment controls only work when connected to power.

If, after verifying bed and surface are connected to power, and the bed will still not adjust,

verify the communication cable is securely connected between the surface blower box and

the frame.

3. When trying to weigh my patient, a beep sounds and the “raise bed” indicator ﬂashes,

and I’m unable to weigh the patient. Why?

If the bed is equipped with IntelliDrive® XL Transport System, you cannot weigh a patient

when the bed is in transport mode. To remove the bed from the transport mode, on the

caregiver control pod, press and hold the “raise bed” control until you hear a single beep

conﬁrmation. You can now weigh the patient.

4. When trying to arm bed exit, a beep sounds and the “raise bed” indicator ﬂashes, and I’m

unable to arm the system. Why?

If the bed is equipped with IntelliDrive® XL Transport System, you cannot arm bed exit when

the bed is in transport mode. To remove the bed from the transport mode, on the caregiver

control pod, press and hold the “raise bed” control until you hear a single beep conﬁrmation.

You can now arm the bed exit system.

5. I’m having diﬃcultly moving the bed side to side after returning from a transport. Why?

If the bed is equipped with IntelliDrive® XL Transport System, while the transport wheel is on

the ﬂoor you will not be able to make small lateral movements. Raise the height of the bed to

remove from transport mode, in order to make small lateral movements or to move the bed

side to side. You can raise the height of the bed by disengaging transport mode by pressing

the “Disengage” control on the transport pod, or you can use raise the height of the bed using

the caregiver controls.

6. I’ve forgotten to retract the width of the bed before transport, can I adjust the width of

the bed when it’s unplugged?

Yes, but you will have to adjust it manually. Powered width expansion control only works

when plugged into power. To manually retract the bed, ﬁrst use the CPR deﬂate to release

enough air from the surface. Then adjust the frame by pulling release lever on the head

siderail and simultaneously push slide extender inward. Next complete the same action on the

intermediate siderail. Repeat on other side of the bed.

Usage Features:

Width Adjustment: The bed offers powered width adjustment, allowing it to expand or retract to either 40" or 50". This feature is crucial for accommodating patients of varying sizes and for navigating through doorways. A continuous beep signals that the bed is not fully adjusted, with a single beep confirmation indicating a complete adjustment. If the bed is unplugged, manual width adjustment is possible by using the CPR deflate feature to release air from the surface, then pulling release levers on the head and intermediate siderails while simultaneously pushing the slide extender inward.
Length Adjustment: The foot section of the bed can be shortened by pressing and holding the "Foot Shorter" control, which is useful for fitting the bed into elevators or smaller spaces. The surface blower box can also be removed to further reduce the bed's length by disconnecting hoses and lifting the box.
Height Adjustment and Patient Access: The bed's height can be adjusted to facilitate patient ingress and egress. For patients needing to get their feet closer to the ground, the low air loss surface offers a "seat deflate" feature, activated via the blower box by pressing "mattress adjust" and then "deflate seat." If equipped with IntelliDrive® XL, placing the bed in transport mode can lower it an additional 1.5 inches, further aiding patient access.
IntelliDrive® XL Transport System: This system enhances the bed's mobility, allowing for easier transport of patients. When in transport mode, certain functions like patient weighing and bed exit arming are disabled, indicated by a flashing "raise bed" indicator and a beep. To exit transport mode, caregivers must press and hold the "raise bed" control on the caregiver control pod until a single beep confirmation is heard. This system also affects lateral movement; if the transport wheel is on the floor, small lateral movements are restricted. Raising the bed height or disengaging transport mode via the transport pod's "Disengage" control enables lateral movement.
Patient Weighing: The bed includes an integrated weighing system. However, weighing is not possible when the bed is in transport mode. Exiting transport mode by pressing and holding the "raise bed" control will enable the weighing function.
Bed Exit System: The bed exit system can be armed to alert caregivers if a patient attempts to leave the bed. Similar to weighing, this system cannot be armed when the bed is in transport mode and requires exiting transport mode first.
Mattress Inflation and Surface Adjustment: If the mattress does not remain inflated, caregivers should check if the CPR mechanism is fully closed by turning it counter-clockwise. After ensuring it's closed, pressing "Max Inflate" on the air supply unit will quickly inflate the mattress. For new patients, it's essential to program their height and weight into the system via the blower box. This involves using arrow controls to navigate to height and weight settings, then using increase/decrease controls to input the patient's data. The surface will then automatically adjust pressure redistribution based on these inputs.
Battery Management: The bed and IntelliDrive® XL system are powered by batteries, which should be charged by plugging the bed into AC power whenever possible. The caregiver control panel and transport pod display battery charge indicators. For transport, it's recommended to have at least one bar on the transport pod's battery indicator. If the IntelliDrive® XL battery fully discharges during transport, the bed's height can be raised using caregiver controls to lift the transport wheel off the ground, allowing the bed to be connected to AC power.

Maintenance Features:

Communication Cable Verification: If the powered width adjustment is not working despite the bed and surface being plugged in, caregivers should verify that the communication cable between the surface blower box and the frame is securely connected.
CPR Mechanism Check: In cases of mattress deflation, ensuring the CPR mechanism is fully closed is a key troubleshooting step.
Power Cord Connection: Regular verification that both power cords for the bed and surface are securely plugged into power is essential for the proper functioning of powered features.
