The unbalanced insert point is a “break” in the signal path to permit the insertion of external signal-processing
devices, such as compressor/limiters or graphic equalizers.
When a TRS jack is inserted, the signal path is interrupted before the fader: the output signal leaves the console
on the TIP of the TRS plug and returns on the RING.
A special cable (custom-made for use as an insertion cable) is required for interconnection with external
equipment, with separate send/return 2-conductor (unbalanced) plugs (as shown below):
