Overview

The KitchenAid Blender (model 5KSB1585) is a household appliance designed for various food preparation tasks, offering a range of blending speeds and specialized functions to achieve optimal results. Its primary function is to blend ingredients, from chopping and mixing to pureeing and liquefying, with additional features for specific tasks like hot foods and ice crushing.

Function Description

The blender operates with a powerful motor, controlled by a clean touch control pad located on its die-cast metal base. It features four distinct speed settings: CHOP, MIX, PUREE, and LIQUEFY, allowing users to select the appropriate speed for different ingredient consistencies and desired outcomes.

  • CHOP: This setting is ideal for coarsely chopping fruits, vegetables, and even cooked meats, making it suitable for preparing ingredients for salads, salsas, or sandwich fillings. It's also recommended for initial blending of ingredient mixtures to ensure thorough combination before increasing speed.
  • MIX: The MIX setting is designed for combining ingredients to a smooth consistency, such as gravies, sauces, or pancake batter. It helps to eliminate lumps and achieve a uniform texture.
  • PUREE: This speed is perfect for creating smooth purees from fruits, vegetables, and cooked meats, often used for baby food, soups, or smooth ricotta and cottage cheese.
  • LIQUEFY: The highest speed, LIQUEFY, is used for achieving very fine, liquid consistencies, such as blended ice drinks, frozen yogurt-based drinks, fruit-based drinks, ice milk-based drinks, and sherbet-based drinks. It can also be used for grating hard cheese or making mousse.

In addition to the four standard speeds, the blender includes three special functions: HOT FOODS, CRUSH ICE, and PULSE.

  • HOT FOODS: This function is specifically designed for blending hot foods or liquids like soups and sauces. It starts at a low speed and gradually ramps up over 90 seconds to higher speeds, preventing splashing of hot liquids and ensuring safe operation. The lid must be securely in place when using this function.
  • CRUSH ICE: This timed function automatically pulses for 30 seconds at staggered intervals, optimized for crushing ice or other hard ingredients without the need for added liquid. It's effective for preparing ice for beverages or finely chopping frozen fruits.
  • PULSE: The PULSE function offers a "Pulse-at-any-speed" feature, allowing users to manually control the blending duration at any of the four speeds. This is useful for achieving precise chopping or mixing results, such as making cookie crumbs or chopping fruits and vegetables to a desired consistency. The PULSE mode does not work with the HOT FOODS or CRUSH ICE modes.

The blender also incorporates a "Soft Start" blending feature. When a speed is selected (excluding PULSE and CRUSH ICE), the blender automatically begins at a lower speed to draw ingredients into the blades, then quickly increases to the chosen speed for optimal performance.

Usage Features

The KitchenAid Blender is designed for ease of use and safety.

  • Assembly: The pitcher securely attaches to the base by aligning tabs and rotating clockwise until it clicks into place. The pitcher handle can be positioned on either the right or left side of the base. The lid, with its integrated ingredient cup, securely attaches to the pitcher, with the lid handle aligning with the pitcher handle.
  • Power and Operation: To operate, the blender must be plugged into a grounded outlet, and the POWER button pressed. The power indicator light will flash, indicating it's ready. Users then select their desired speed or special function. The white indicator light by the selected speed will stay lit during operation. Speeds can be changed without stopping by pressing a new speed button.
  • Ingredient Addition: The lid features an ingredient cup that can be removed to add liquids or ice cubes while the blender is operating at CHOP or MIX speeds. For higher speeds or hot contents, it's recommended to stop the blender before adding ingredients.
  • Safety Precautions: The blender will only operate when the POWER button is pressed first. It's crucial to always operate the blender with the cover securely in place. Hands and utensils should be kept out of the container while blending to prevent injury or damage. A scraper may be used only when the blender is not running. Blades are sharp and should be handled carefully. The flashing light indicates the blender is ready to operate, and contact with blades or movable parts should be avoided.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning the KitchenAid Blender is straightforward, with options for both attached and individual cleaning of components.

  • Blender Base, Control Band, Cord, Lid, and Ingredient Cup: These parts should be cleaned by unplugging the blender, then wiping with a warm, damp cloth, followed by a clean damp cloth, and finally drying with a soft cloth. The blender base or cord should never be immersed in water. Abrasive cleansers or scouring pads should not be used.
  • Pitcher (Attached Cleaning): To clean the pitcher while it's attached to the base, fill it halfway with warm (not hot) water and add 1 or 2 drops of dishwashing liquid. Secure the lid, attach the pitcher to the base, press the STIR speed setting, and run the blender for 5 to 10 seconds. Afterward, remove the pitcher and rinse with warm water.
  • Pitcher (Individual Cleaning): The pitcher can be washed in a dishwasher, placed upside down. Alternatively, it can be hand-washed with soapy water, rinsed, and wiped dry.
  • Lid and Ingredient Cup: For best results, the lid and ingredient cup should be hand-washed.

The manual also provides troubleshooting steps for common issues, such as the blender not operating when a setting is selected or stopping while blending, guiding users to check power connections, reset the motor, or address potential overloads or jams.
