2. Grasp the spring retainer with a pliers and push
it toward the starter, compressing the anti-dri
spring to expose the retaining ring. See Figure
7-29.
3. Remove the retaining ring from the armature
sha using either a retaining ring pliers or snap
ring removal tool (Kohler Part No. 25 761 18-S), as
described in Steps 4, and 5. See Figures 7-30,
7-31, and 7-32. Do not reuse the old retainer.

1. The rubber dust cover has a molded lip on
the inside that snaps over a lip on the front
of the drive pinion. See Figure 7-29. Turn the
drive pinion clockwise until it reaches the
fully extended position. While holding it in the
extended position, grasp the tip of the dust cover
with a pliers or vise grip and pull it free from the
pinion.
