Attention: 
•  Go over “Installation Guidelines” on page 107 to ensure that you work safely.
•  Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see 
“Power off the server” on page 12).
•  If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, 
or remove the server from the rack.
•  Do not touch the processor contacts. Contaminants on the processor contacts, such as oil from your skin, 
can cause connection failures.
Note: The heat sink, processor, and processor carrier for the system might be different from those shown in 
the illustrations.

Procedure
Step 1.  Make preparations for this task. 
a.  Remove the top cover (see “Remove the top cover” on page 214).
b.  Remove the following components depending on the location of the processor that is to be 
removed: 
•  If the processor is located on the processor and memory expansion tray, do not remove the 
expansion tray. Only remove the air baffle from the expansion tray.
