24 SolsTiS User Manual v10.0
5 Operating the Laser System
Caution! Use of controls, adjustments or procedures other
than those described in this manual may result in hazardous
radiation exposure.
Danger! The SolsTiS + pump laser system is a Class IV, high
power laser whose beams, by definition, are a safety and fire
hazard. Take precautions to prevent exposure to direct and
reflected beams. Diffuse as well as specular reflections can
cause severe skin or eye damage. This damage can be
instantaneous and/or permanent.
The instructions below for operating the SolsTiS system should be followed in
sequence:
5.1 Initial Start Up – Activating the SolsTiS System
Once the system operator has confirmed that any persons within the
designated laser hazard zone are following all prescribed safety procedures
(see safety guidelines in Section D.1 above for more information), the
operator may proceed to activating the laser system.
(IF APPLICABLE) Initial Alignment of Pump Laser to SolsTiS
SolsTiS with Integrated Pump Laser
If installation was not included with your system, and provided that you have
first contacted M Squared Lasers to confirm self-installation of your system,
the following steps should be followed to first mount and coarsely align your
pump laser to the SolsTiS laser head:
1. Carefully unpack and prepare the pump laser for use per
the pump laser manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Taking great care to avoid any drops or mechanical shock
to the SolsTiS laser head (which may be heavy and require
more than one person to lift and manoeuver it safely), place
the SolsTiS laser head and baseplate in a suitable location,
per the guidelines discussed in Section 4.3.
3. Make sure the SolsTiS baseplate is free of burrs, deep
scratches and dirt to ensure good thermal contact with the
baseplate and the bottom of the pump laser.
4. Taking great care to avoid any drops or mechanical shock
to the pump laser head (which may be heavy and require
more than one person to lift and manoeuver it safely),
gently place the pump laser head on the SolsTiS baseplate,
adjusting its position on the baseplate so that the mounting
holes on the pump laser are aligned with those on the
baseplate.
5. To minimize the amount of pump beam alignment required
later, take care to align the edge of the pump laser flush
with the edge of the baseplate.
6. Carefully bolt the pump laser down to the SolsTiS
baseplate, keeping its edge flush with the baseplate edge.
Taking great care not to overtighten the bolts or deform the
baseplate, torque each mounting bolt to finger tight plus
one additional ¼ turn, or per the torque setting
recommended by the pump laser manufacturer.
SolsTiS with Separate (Non-Integrated) Pump Laser
If installation was not included with your system, and provided that
you have first contacted M Squared Lasers to confirm self-
installation of your system, the following steps should be followed to
first coarsely align your pump laser to the SolsTiS laser head:
1. Carefully unpack and prepare the pump laser for use per
the pump laser manufacturer’s instructions.
