COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
The Coolant temperature sensor (CTS) is located in the coolant pipe of the cylinder head. The sensor uses a
thermistor which is sensitive to the change in temperature. The thermistor resistance changes as the temperature of
the engine coolant flowing past the sensor changes. i.e Negative temperature co-efficient type. The ECU checks CTS
voltage and uses the information to smoothen the engine operation

DTC Description
1
P0118 Coolant temperature sensor voltage above upper limit
2
P0117 Coolant temperature sensor voltage below lower limit
NORMAL OPERATION
The ECU supplies a reference voltage to the coolant temperature sensor. The coolant temperature sensor converts the
engine coolant temperature to a voltage and sends as an output. The ECU checks whether the voltage is within the
specified range.
Reference Voltage - 5V± 1.5
