Overview

The MEC Smart Series Electrics are modules designed for clay target machines, aiming to enhance user experience and reliability by eliminating common electronic component failures. These modules are built to withstand extreme environmental conditions, having undergone rigorous testing in hot, cold, and wet climates.

Function Description:

The Smart Series Electrics provide comprehensive control and monitoring capabilities for clay target machines. Key functions include:

  • Target Counting: Tracks machine usage with both a lifetime target count and a resettable counter. The lifetime counter records every time the machine is fired, even if a clay target is not launched. The resettable counter allows users to track usage over specific periods and can be reset by pressing and holding the selector button until the screen zeros out.
  • Fault Code Display: In the event of a machine malfunction, specific fault codes are displayed on the LED screen, providing information about the nature of the failure. A full list of these codes and their solutions is provided in the manual.
  • Battery Voltage Readout: Features a built-in battery voltage readout, allowing users to monitor the current battery level. The machine automatically shuts off if the voltage drops below 10V to prevent damage.
  • Arm/Disarm Functionality: The system includes an arm/disarm plug that connects to the pull cord and limit switch wires, ensuring safe operation.
  • Firmware Version Display: Users can view the current firmware version of the Smart Series Electrics.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Waterproof Rating: IP67 waterproof rating, ensuring protection against water ingress.
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: Built-in protection against incorrect battery connection.
  • Enclosure Material: Electronics are enclosed in Noryl resin, which protects them from weather elements.
  • Voltage Cut-off: Automatic shutdown at 10V battery voltage to prevent machine damage.
  • Operating Voltage: Displays current voltage when selected.
  • Mounting: Can be mounted using included hardware directly to the mainframe or with 3M Dual Lock strips, especially for machines built prior to November 2019 or for retrofitting on non-MEC machines. The mainframe holes for mounting are typically 6.75 inches apart.
  • Connectors: Utilizes J1 and J2 plugs for connecting power, motor, pull cord, and limit switch wires. Two types of male connectors are provided for motor wires to accommodate different motor styles.

Usage Features:

  • User-Friendly Interface: Designed to be extremely user-friendly with a simple push-button interface.
  • LED Display: A clear LED display shows current settings, codes, errors, target counts, battery voltage, and firmware version.
  • Selector Button: Allows users to toggle through various functions: clay counter, lifetime counter, resettable counter, battery voltage, and firmware version. Holding the button for 5 seconds on the counter screen resets the resettable counter.
  • Indicator Light: A red indicator light signifies when the machine is armed and blinks when in sleep mode.
  • Quick Diagnostics: Fault codes provide immediate feedback on machine issues, aiding in quick troubleshooting.
  • Safety Guidelines: Emphasizes critical safety practices:
    • Always disarm the machine and disconnect the battery before making adjustments, loading targets, or moving/repositioning the machine.
    • Always stand behind the machine at a safe distance during operation.
    • Always read and follow all operating instructions.
    • Never use the selector button when the machine is armed.

Maintenance Features:

  • Replaceable Board: The electronic board can be quickly replaced in the event of a malfunction and is covered under the machine's warranty.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting section with specific fault codes (FAULT1, FAULT2, FAULT7, FAULT8, FAULT9, OVERLd, OUETHt, HI BAT, LO BAT, OFFbat, TEST or SU1), their associated problems, and recommended solutions.
    • FAULT1 (Motor overload/Locked Gear Box): Replace the motor/gearbox.
    • FAULT2 (Mechanical Fault - Arm lever cocked, limit switch closed): Replace the limit switch.
    • FAULT7 (Brake's FET short): Disconnect power, wait 5 seconds or longer, then reconnect.
    • FAULT8 (Open load detected): Disconnect power, wait 5 seconds or longer, then reconnect.
    • FAULT9 (Run-Away motor - Limit switch un-cocked for >4 seconds): Disconnect power, wait 5 seconds or longer, then reconnect.
    • OVERLd (3 consecutive FAULT1 recover attempts after smart driver cool down): Disconnect power, wait 5 seconds or longer, then reconnect.
    • OUETHt (3 consecutive FAULT1 recover attempts with no smart FET's cool down): Disconnect power, wait 5 seconds or longer, then reconnect.
    • HI BAT (<10V): Check battery connection; replace battery if issue persists.
    • LO BAT (>15V): Replace with a charged battery.
    • OFFbat (Battery out of range for >3 seconds): Reconnect the battery.
    • TEST or SU1 (Corrosion/shorts on Arm/Disarm switch): Verify or replace the Arm/Disarm switch.
  • Wiring Management: Includes zip ties for securing wiring to the mainframe and motor, ensuring a tidy and protected installation.
  • Component Accessibility: The design allows for easy access to components for replacement or maintenance.
