Calculating the Preload Spacer
Method for determining the correct preload spacer.
Follow the appropriate procedure below.
8. Fit a master spacer X (maximum size 15.155mm) into position
in the carrier (Fig.2.23 and 2.24).
9. Using a suitable tool (CT45), press the outer bearing cone on
the pinion shaft firmly against the master spacer (Fig.2.25)
using a press load of 6 - 8 tons.
CAUTION:
When using a press to fit the outer bearing cone on the
pinion, always support the pinion head with a suitable block
of wood (Fig. 2.25). Failure to do this could result in damage
to the carrier casting or drive gear assembly.
10. Fit the input flange into position and tighten the pinion nut to
a torque value of 1350 - 1670Nm
NOTE: Do not use a standard flange and pinion nut for this
operation. Use a set up pinion nut.
