Do you have a question about the Napoleon Ascent 36-1 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The provided document is an installation and operation manual for a Napoleon Ascent™ 36-1 gas fireplace, available in both natural gas (B36NTR-1 / B36NTRE-1) and propane (B36PTR-1 / B36PTRE-1) models. It is certified to Canadian and American National Standards CSA 2.22 and ANSI Z21.50 for vented decorative gas appliances, suitable for indoor use, including mobile homes.

Function Description:

The Napoleon Ascent™ 36-1 is a vented decorative gas appliance designed to provide a unique and realistic glowing effect, not primarily intended as a heating appliance. It features a gas burner system that produces flames and glowing embers, mimicking a traditional wood-burning fireplace. The appliance is equipped with an ignition device that automatically lights the pilot, offering both Intermittent Pilot Ignition (IPI) and Continuous Pilot Ignition (CPI) modes. The CPI mode includes an integrated seven-day timer, which automatically switches off the pilot if the appliance has not been used for seven days, aiming to minimize fuel consumption. The unit can be controlled via a switch, remote, or thermostat, depending on the model and installed accessories. A safety barrier is provided to reduce the risk of burns from the hot viewing glass, which is a critical safety feature for households with children or at-risk individuals. The appliance is designed for either horizontal or vertical venting, with specific requirements and components for each installation type.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Natural Gas or Propane. The appliance is not convertible to other gases unless a certified kit is used.
  • Altitude: Approved for installations up to 4,500 ft (1372m). For elevations above this, the certified high altitude input rating must be reduced by 4% for each additional 1,000 ft (305m).
  • Max. Input (BTU/hr): 18,000 BTU/hr for both natural gas and propane models.
  • Gas Supply Pressure (Min. Inlet): 4.5” w.c. (11mb) for natural gas, 11” w.c. (27mb) for propane.
  • Gas Supply Pressure (Max. Inlet): 7” w.c. (17mb) for natural gas, 13” w.c. (32mb) for propane. Max. inlet pressure not to exceed 13”.
  • Manifold Pressure (Under Flow Conditions): 3.5” w.c. (9mb) for natural gas, 10” w.c. (25mb) for propane.
  • Vent Pipe System: Uses a 4” (102mm) exhaust / 7” (178mm) air intake vent pipe system.
  • Maximum Vent Lengths: 20 feet (6.1m) horizontal run, 40 feet (12.2m) vertical vent length.
  • Glass Type: Factory equipped with 4mm tempered glass.
  • Electrical Rating: 115V, 60HZ, less than 12 amperes.
  • Battery Back-up: Equipped with a battery back-up system that uses 4 ‘AA’ batteries (not supplied) for operation during power failures.

Usage Features:

  • Ignition System: Offers both Intermittent Pilot Ignition (IPI) and Continuous Pilot Ignition (CPI) modes. The CPI mode includes a 7-day timer that automatically shuts off the pilot if the appliance is not used, conserving fuel.
  • Controls: Can be operated by a switch, remote control, or thermostat.
  • Flame Appearance: The manual notes that changes in flame appearance from "HI" to "LO" are more evident in natural gas than in propane. It also mentions that the flame may not appear yellow immediately after ignition, requiring 15 to 30 minutes for the final flame color to establish.
  • Log Placement: Specific instructions are provided for log placement to ensure proper function and prevent delayed ignition or property damage. Logs are fragile and must be handled with care.
  • Glowing Embers: PHAZER™ logs and glowing embers are exclusive to Napoleon, designed to provide a unique and realistic glowing effect. Proper placement is crucial for maximum effect.
  • Charcoal Embers: Random placement of charcoal embers along the front and sides of the log support is recommended for a realistic look. Fine dust from the bag should not be used.
  • Optional Blower: An optional blower can be installed, which is thermally activated and starts approximately 15 minutes after lighting the appliance, running for about 30 minutes after the appliance is turned off.
  • Venturi Adjustment: The air shutter is factory set, but can be adjusted by a qualified installer to achieve a more yellow or blue flame, with considerations for carbonization and flame lifting.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: The appliance and its venting system should be inspected before use and at least annually by a qualified service person.
  • Cleaning: The control compartment, media, burner, air shutter opening, and surrounding area should be cleaned by vacuuming or brushing at least once a year. Logs, rocks, and glass should be removed for proper cleaning of the burner and pilot assembly.
  • Pilot Assembly Cleaning: Gently remove any build-up on the pilot assembly, including thermopile, thermocouple, flame sensor, and igniter (if equipped). The flame sensor should be cleaned with fine emery cloth or a synthetic scrub pad to remove oxides.
  • Burner Port Check: Ensure all burner ports are burning correctly. Clean any ports that are not burning properly.
  • Pilot Flame Check: Verify that the pilot flame is large enough to engulf the flame sensor and/or thermocouple/thermopile and reaches the burner.
  • Safety Barrier/Door Glass: The safety barrier must be reinstalled after servicing. The glass door should be handled with care as it is heavy and fragile. Only replacement glass/frame assemblies supplied by the manufacturer should be used.
  • Glass Care: Clean glass with an ammonia-free glass cleaner after the first 10 hours of operation and as needed thereafter. Avoid abrasive cleaners, razor blades, steel wool, or metallic objects on the glass surface to prevent damage.
  • Relief System Inspection: Inspect the relief system (main glass door or flaps on the firebox top) to ensure they open freely and close sealed.
  • Gas Control Valve Check: Ensure the gas control valve pilot and Hi/Lo knobs move freely.
  • Vent System Inspection: For non-vent-free appliances, check that the venting system is correctly installed, safe, and unobstructed. Re-install and re-seal the vent-air intake system if disassembled.
