3. CHAPTER THREE: OPERATION
3.1 Initial Startup Procedure
1. Set furnace power switch ON:
a. Check for dents and broken components.
b. If Set Value (SV) is not set to 1000º C, press the up (↑) or down (↓) arrow accordingly to achieve
SV of 1000º C.
c. Displayed temperature will start increasing to the set value of 1000º C.
d. Instrument will be in alarm status until the furnace temperature exceeds 980º C.
e. Once the furnace has maintained the operating temperature for 30 minutes, it will be necessary to
AUTOTUNE the temperature controller. Refer to the TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER
SETTINGS in the SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this manual for auto tuning procedures.
NOTE: Autotuning needs only to be performed once.
2. Set detector module power switch to ON:
a. Check for dents and broken components.
b. Zeroing light (located on auto zero button) may light for several seconds.
c. Power is supplied to the fans.
d. Temperature controller for the detector will begin displaying.
1) Displayed temperature will start decreasing to the set value of 10ºC.
2) If SV is not 10ºC, use the procedure in section 3.1 to set it to 10ºC.
3. Set H/V switch to ON: The number displayed on the level meter may increase in the positive
direction. The number may settle at one voltage but peak at a higher value.
4. Set UV switch to the ON position. After several minutes the number displayed on the sulfur level will
start increasing in the positive direction.
NOTE: If the lamp was cold (had not been lit) it will take at least 30 minutes for the UV lamp’s intensity to
stabilize.
5. Set sensitivity knob to x50.
6. Press the auto zero button.
a. Zeroing light illuminates until a level of zero is reached.
b. The absolute value displayed on the level meter decreases towards zero (0.0).
7. Turn ON gases. Set pressures and flows.
a. Zeroing light illuminates until a level of zero is reached.
b. The absolute value displayed on the level meter decreases towards zero (0.0).
c. Supply oxygen pressure at 35 psi.
d. Set pyro rotometer for 2.5.
e. Supply sample, span and zero gas pressures at 35 psi.
f. Set Sample/Cal switch to Sample.
