What to do if my PCM 2003 5.0L MPI Engine cranks but won't start?

  If your PCM Engine cranks but struggles to start or doesn't start at all, the issue could stem from an improper starting procedure. Review the 'STARTING ENGINE' section in your operating instructions. Other potential causes include a low fuel tank level (fill the tank), closed shut-off valves (open them), plugged fuel filters, kinked or plugged fuel lines or a plugged fuel-tank vent. A faulty fuel pump or anti-siphon valve could also be to blame. Try opening the throttle 100% while cranking the engine, and then immediately reduce the throttle to 1000 RPM once the engine starts. Also, check the fuel for water or contamination; if found, drain and clean the fuel system.

  If your PCM Engine is overheating (applicable to engines with Fresh-Water Cooling systems), several factors could be responsible. Check for loose or worn drive belts (adjust or replace as needed) and collapsed, kinked, or leaking hoses (replace them). You can also flush the water hoses in the opposite direction of normal flow. Other possible solutions include replacing the thermostat, ensuring the valve is fully open, removing any restrictions, testing/replacing components as necessary, replacing the impeller, checking for cooling system leaks (and refilling the system), cleaning/flushing the exchanger, and installing the correct coolant mixture (50% antifreeze and 50% water).

  If your PCM Engine will not crank or cranks slowly, this may be due to a problem with the engine management system. Ensure the battery switch is ON and the remote control is positioned exactly in Neutral. Also, replace the fuse or reset circuit breakers. Inspect the battery cables and starter circuit wiring, cleaning and tightening all connections. Repair or replace any damaged wiring. Recharge, test, and replace the battery as needed.

  If your PCM Engine exhibits poor performance, this could be due to an ignition malfunction. Check the remote control and throttle body linkage for free movement and proper adjustment; repair or replace parts as necessary. Remove water and find the source of entry. Clean the bottom and apply anti-fouling paint. Reduce or redistribute the load. Clean the flame arrestor. Also, repair the cooling system.
