F- VENTING
A.General
1--For connectionto gasventsor chimneys,ventinstallationshall bein accordancewith Part7, VentingofEquipment,of thecurrenteditionof the
NationalFuelGas Code,ANSIZ223.1/NFPA54,orapplicableprovisionsof the localbuildingcodes.
2--Draft: Sufficientdraft mustbeavailableforremovalofproductsof combustion.If draftis notadequate,spillageofthe productsof combustion
will occurat the bottomoutletof the drafthood.Ifsucha conditionshouldexistchecktheflueand chimneyto determinecauseof insufficient
draft.It isalsoimportantthat ampleairis availablein theboiler roomto facilitatedraft.
3--Vent connectorshouldslope upwardat least1/4"per lineal footbetweenthe drafthoodoutletandthechimney.
4--Flue orvent connectormustbe insertedinto butnot beyondtheinsidewallof the chimneyflue.
5--Vent connectorsservingappliancesventedbynaturaldraftshallnot beconnectedintoanyportionofmechanicaldraftsystemsoperating
underpositivepressure.
6--Horizontalportionsof theventingsystemsshall besupportedtopreventsaggingby useof metalstrappingor equivalentmeansandbe located
atno morethan 12ft. intervals.
7--When anexistingboilerisremovedfrom a commonventingsystem,thecommonventingsystemis likelytobetoo largeforproperventingof
theappliancesremainingconnectedto it.
At thetime of removalof anexistingboiler,thefollowingstepsshall befollowedwith eachapplianceremainingconnectedto the common
ventingsystemplacedin operation,whilethe otherappliancesremainingconnectedto thecommonventingsystemare not inoperation.
a.Sealanyunusedopeningin thecommonventingsystem.
b.Visuallyinspectthe ventingsystemfor propersize and horizontalpitchand determinethereisno blockageor restriction,leakage,corrosion
and otherdeficiencieswhichcouldcausean unsafecondition.
c.Insofaras is practical,closeall buildingdoorsand windowsand alldoorsbetweenthespacein whichtheappliancesremainingconnected
to thecommonventingsystemare locatedandotherspacesofthe building.Turnon anyclothesdryersandanyappliancenotconnectedto
the commonventingsystem.Turnon anyexhaustfans,suchas rangehoodsand bathroomexhausts,so theywilloperateatmaximum
speed.Donot operatea summerexhaustfan.Close fireplacedampers.
d.Placein operationtheappliancebeinginspected.Followthe lightinginstructions.Adjustthermostatso appliancewill operatecontinuously.
e.Testfor spillageat the drafthoodreliefopeningafter5 minutesof mainburneroperation.Usethe flameofa matchorcandle, orsmokefrom
a cigarette,cigar orpipe.
f. Afterit hasbeendeterminedthat eachapplianceremainingconnectedtothecommonventingsystemproperlyventswhentestedas
outlinedabove,returndoors,windows,exhaustfans,fireplacedampersandanyothergas-burningapplianceto their previousconditionsof
use.
g.Anyimproperoperationofthecommonventingsystemshouldbe correctedso theinstallationconformswith thecurrenteditionof the
NationalFuel GasCode,ANSIZ223.1/NFPA54.Whenresizinganyportionof the commonventingsystem,the commonventingsystem
should beresizedto approachminimumsize as determinedusingtheappropriatetableslocatedin the chapter"Sizingof CategoryI Venting
Systems",inthe currenteditionof theNationalFuelGasCode,ANSIZ223.1/NFPA54.
8--Single WallTypeVentPipeshouldbefurnishedbetweenthedrafthoodandchimney.If theventconnectorshallbelocatedin orpassthrougha
coldarea,the ventconnectorshallbeof listed double-wallTypeB or Lmaterial.
