Cleaning the Series 61162Steam Boiler with Skim Tapping
Thefollowingcleaningprocedureshallbe performedbya qualifiedserviceperson.
1. Cleantheboileras describedbelownolaterthanoneweekaftertheinitialstart up,Cleaningwillbe moreeffectiveiftheboileroperatesa day
ortwoto loosensedimentand impuritiesinthesystem.
2, Theboiler mustbe cleanedto removeanyaccumulatior_ofoil, grease,sludge,etc.thatmaybeinthesystem,Thesesubstancescancause
foamingand surgingofthe boilerwater,producingan unstablewaterline andwatercarryoverto thesystem,
WARNING:CLEANINGTHEBOILERREQUIRESTHEUSEOFVERYHOTWATERANDCORROSIVECHEMICALS.USECAREWHEN
HANDLINGTO PREVENTiNJURY.
3. Connecta 11/2"pipenippleand shutoffvalveto skim tapping.
4. Connecta 11/2"drainlineoff of the skimvalve,runto a pointof safedischarge.
5. Closeall valvesto the system.Providea meansof continuousfreshwaterto theboilerfor the cleaningprocess.
6. Openthe skimvalve.Fill theboiler untilwaterbeginsto flow outof the valve.Shutofffill valve.
7. Usecommonwashingsoda(suchas Arm and HammerSuperWashingSoda).Mixthesoda withwaterin a 10quartpailand pourintothe
boilerthroughthe safetyvalvetapping.Mixa proportionof one(1) poundof washingsodafor each800squarefeetEDRnet boilerrating.
CAUTION:DO NOTLEAVETHEBOILERUNATFENDEDWHILEFIRING.TAKEGREATCARENOTTO ALLOWTHEWATERLEVELTO
DROPBELOWTHEBOT[OM OFTHEGAUGEGLASSORTOALLOWFRESHWATERMAKEUPTO FLOWINTOOFAST.THISWILLAVOID
THE POSSIBILITYOFCAUSINGTHEBOILERSECTIONSTO FRACTURE.
8. Turn burnersonand allowthe boilerwaterto heat uptojust belowsteaming(180to200degreesF).Cyclethe burnersto maintaintemperature
duringskimming.Do notallowtheboiler to steam.Steamingmixesup thecontaminantsinthe waterinsteadof floatingthemat the surface.
9. Openthemake-upwatervalveto continuouslyfeedwaterto the boiler.Allowwaterto flow outof theskimtapping.
10. Continueskimmingthe boileruntilthe waterflowingfromthe skimtappingflowsclear.Thiswill takesometime,possiblyseveralhoursfora dirty
system.
11, Afterskimmingis complete,closethe skimvalveandturn offthe boiler.
12. Closethe make-upwatervalveandopentheboilerdrain valve.
13. Draintheboiler completely.Refillanddrain againoneor twotimesto makesure allof the sodahasbeenwashedout.
14. Restorepipingto normal.Pipea nippleand capin theskim valve.
15. Note: If the gaugeglass becomesdirtyagain,this indicatesmorecontaminantshaveworkedloosein thesystem.Repeatthe cleaningand
skimmingprocessas neededto cleanthe system.
