NOTICE
Shortened engi
ne service life could result if second
choice oils are used.
Aftermarket Oil Additives
Perkins does not recommend the use of aftermarket
additives in oil. It is not necessary to use aftermarket
additives in o
rder to achieve the engine’s maximum
service life or rated performance. Fully formulated,
finished oils consist of base oils and of commercial
additive pac
kages. These additive packages are
blended into the base oils at precise percentages in
order to help provide finished oils with performance
characteris
tics that meet industry standards.
There are no industry standard tests that evaluate
the performa
nce or the compatibility of aftermarket
additives in finished oil. Aftermarket additives may
not be compatible with the finished oil’s additive
package, wh
ich could lower the performance of the
finished oil. The aftermarket additive could fail to
mix with the finished oil. This could produce sludge
in the cran
kcase. Perkins discourages the use of
aftermarke t additives in finished oils.
To achieve
the best performance from a Perkins
engine, conform to the following guidelines:
Select the
correct oil, or a commercial oil that meets
the EMA Recommended Guideline on Diesel
Engine Oil” or the recommended API classification.
See the appropriate “Lubricant Viscosities” table in
order to find the correct oil viscosity grade for your
engine.
At the specified interval, service the engine. Use
new oil an
d install a new oil filter.
Perform maintenance at the intervals that are
specifie
d in the Operation and Maintenance
Manual, “Maintenance Interval Schedule”.
S·O·S Oil
analysis
Some engines may be equipped with an oil sampling
valve. I
f S·O·S oil analysis is required the oil sampling
valve is used to obtain samples of the engine oil. The
S·O·S oil analysis will complement the preventive
mainten
ance program.
The S·O·S oil analysis is a diagnostic tool that is used
to deter
mine oil performance and component wear
rates. Contamination can be identified and measured
through the use of the S·O·S oil analysis. The S·O·S
oil ana
lysis includes the following tests:
The Wear Rate An
alysis monitors the wear of the
engine’s metals. The amount of wear metal and
type of wear metal that is in the oil is analyzed. The
increase in th
e rate of engine wear metal in the
oil is as important as the quantity of engine wear
metal in the oil.
Tests are conducted in order to detect
contamination of the oil by water, glycol or fuel.
The Oil Condition Analysis determines the loss of
the oil’s lubricating properties. An infrared analysis
is used to com
pare the properties of new oil to the
properties of the used oil sample. This analysis
allows technicians to determine the amount of
deteriorat
ion of the oil during use. This analysis
also allows technicians to verify the performance
of the oil according to the specification during the
entire oil c
hange interval.
Fuel Speci
fications
Fuel Recommendations
To get the correct power and performance from
the engine, use a fuel of the correct quality. The
recommend
ed fuel specification for Perkins engines
is shown below:
Cetane num
ber
___________________________ 45 minimum
Viscosity___________ 2,0to4.5cStat4C(10F)
Density________ ________________ 0.835 to 0.855 Kg/liter
Sulfur__
_____________________
0.2% of mass, maximum
Distillation___________________85% at 350 °C (662 °F)
Lubricity______________________________ 460 micrometers
maximum wear scar on “ISO 12156 - 1”
Cetane number
This indi
cates the properties of ignition of the fuel.
Fuel with a low cetane number can be the root
cause of problems during cold start. This will affect
combusti
on.
Viscosity
This is the resistance to flow of a fluid. If this
resistance is outside the limits, the engine and the
engine s
tarting performance in particular can be
affected.
