standard,providedasuitableinterfaceisused.

TheNMEA0183DataInterfaceStandardwas
developedbytheNationalMarineElectronics
AssociationofAmerica.Itisaninternationalstandard
toenableequipmentfrommanydifferentmanufacturers
tobeconnectedtogetherandshareinformation.
TheNMEA0183standardcarriessimilarinformationto
SeaTalk.Howeverithastheimportantdifferencethat
onecablewillonlycarryinformationinonedirection.
ForthisreasonNMEA0183isgenerallyusedto
connectadatareceiverandatransmittertogether,
e.g.acompasssensortransmittingheadingtoaradar
display.Thisinformationispassedin‘sentences’,
eachofwhichhasathreelettersentenceidentier.
Itisthereforeimportantwhencheckingcompatibility
betweenitemsthatthesamesentenceidentiersare
usedsomeexamplesofwhichare:
•VTG-carriesCourseandSpeedOverGrounddata.
•GLL-carrieslatitudeandlongitude.
•DBT-carrieswaterdepth.
•MWV-carriesrelativewindangleandwindspeed
data.
NMEAbaudrates
TheNMEA0183standardoperatesatanumber
ofdifferentspeeds,dependingupontheparticular
requirementorequipmentcapabilities.Typical
examplesare:
•4800baudrate.Usedforgeneralpurpose
communications,includingFastHeadingdata.
•9600baudrate.UsedforNavtex.
•38400baudrate.UsedforAISandotherhighspeed
applications.
