Overview

The Ride JAVA® Adjustable Back Support is a device designed to provide postural support and enhance skin integrity for wheelchair users. It is manufactured by Ride Designs®, a branch of Aspen Seating, LLC.

Function Description

The Ride JAVA® Adjustable Back Support is engineered to offer optimal pelvic support and trunk balance, while allowing freedom of movement for the upper body. It aims to reduce the incidence of pressure sores, though it is not a substitute for comprehensive skin care, including proper diet, cleanliness, and regular pressure relief techniques. The back support features independent adjustability for pelvic support and trunk balance. It can be used with either the Ride Forward™ Cushion for mild to moderate skin breakdown risk or the Ride Custom Cushion for higher risk and more challenging postural control needs.

Usage Features

  • Installation: The JAVA Back comes fully assembled. Installation and initial fitting should ideally be performed by a therapist or authorized Ride Designs supplier. Tools included are 4mm and 5mm Allen wrenches.
  • Safety:
    • Installation of any backrest may alter the wheelchair's center of gravity; anti-tippers or amputee axle adapter brackets may be needed.
    • Do not use the back support without the foam insert and cover in place.
    • Ensure proper placement and secure attachment to the wheelchair.
    • Accurate assessment and adjustment of fit are crucial to prevent serious injury.
    • Do not lift the wheelchair by the JAVA Back.
    • No one should be seated in the wheelchair during the initial four steps of mounting hardware installation.
  • Adjustments:
    • Width Adjustment: Loosen height and width adjustment screws, move pin brackets, align with index marks, and retighten.
    • Seat Depth Adjustment: Loosen depth adjustment screws, move back shell, align with index marks, and retighten.

    • Java Clamp Reversal: Clamps can be flipped upside down to achieve a higher backrest or avoid interferences.
    • Seat to Back Angle Adjustment: Loosen back angle adjustment screws, adjust angle, align with index marks, and retighten.
    • Flexa-just Stays: These can be bent by hand while the user is seated to provide comfortable support to the gluteal area. Bend posteriorly to accommodate pressure or discomfort, or anteriorly for insufficient contact.
    • Pelvic Wedges: Position on the front of the foam insert cover for evaluation, then attach to the Flexa-just platform behind the foam pad.
    • Lateral Trunk Supports: Estimate position with user in chair, then remove foam insert and cover to attach.
    • Dynamic Back Movement: Use a 4mm Allen wrench to adjust screws for desired travel. Ensure equal adjustment on both sides for intermediate settings.
  • Quick Release: The back shell can be easily detached and reattached with one hand by pressing latch release buttons, rotating forward, and lifting upward. For reattachment, guide bottom pins into receiver slots, push top pins into latch mechanism, and ensure latch buttons pop back.
  • Initial Wearing Schedule: Begin with short periods of use. Visually check for reddened areas that should fade within 10-30 minutes. If redness persists longer than 30 minutes, cease use and contact a therapist or doctor. Perform daily skin checks and routine intermittent pressure relief.
  • Follow-up: Annual posture and skin integrity checks by a healthcare professional are recommended, or whenever changes in weight, posture, or general condition occur.

Maintenance Features

  • Fastener Security: Regularly retighten all fasteners using 4mm and 5mm Allen wrenches. Periodically check hardware for security and wear.
  • Cleaning the Foam Insert and Cover:
    1. Remove the foam insert and cover from the back shell.
    2. Open the cover and remove the foam pad, Flexa-just stays (note left/right and bend direction), and Flexa-just platform with pelvic wedges.
    3. Ride Designs recommends outlining pelvic wedge positions with a permanent marker for accurate reattachment.
    4. Close the cover. Machine or hand wash in warm water with regular detergent (no bleach).
    5. Hang dry.
    6. Re-insert Flexa-just stays into correct pockets, facing the correct direction.
    7. Insert foam pad and Flexa-just platform with pelvic wedges, ensuring inserts are not folded or wrinkled.
    8. Close the cover and reattach to the back shell.
    • WARNING: Incorrect installation of Flexa-just stays or pelvic wedges can result in serious injury.
  • Cleaning the Back Shell and Hardware:
    • Use a damp cloth or mild disinfectant to clean the shell, pelvic wedges, and mounting hardware as needed.
    • CAUTION: Do not use isopropyl alcohol or any other chemical solvents.
