Overview

This document is the owner's manual for the Samick SG 500 and SG 120 Digital Grand Pianos.

Function Description

The Samick SG 500 and SG 120 are digital grand pianos designed to offer a solid and professional touch, providing an authentic and precise performance. They feature a keyboard mechanism with four zones of graded hammer action and a return spring application to create the feel of a real acoustic piano. These instruments are capable of producing a wide range of sounds and offer various features for playing, recording, and connecting to external devices.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Keyboard Mechanism: TP/40GH with four zones of graded hammer action and return spring application.
  • Power Supply: Global power supply, typically using a polarized (three-prong) AC power cable.
  • Headphone Jacks: Two stereo headphone jacks for private listening or duets. Plugging in headphones automatically switches off the internal speaker system.
  • Connectivity:
    • USB to Host port for connecting to a computer.
    • MIDI Out port for transmitting MIDI data.
    • Bluetooth for wireless connection to a Bluetooth-capable remote audio device (smartphone, tablet, computer).
    • Aux In for external audio input.

  • Pedals: Supports Soft, Sostenuto, and Sustain pedals. A programmable sustain pedal (expression pedal) is also available.
  • Reverb Effects: Eight reverb effects (1-Hall, 2-Hall2, 3-Room1, 4-Room2, 5-Room3, 6-Stage1, 7-Stage2, 8-Plate).
  • Chorus Effects: Eight chorus effects (1-Chorus1, 2-Chorus2, 3-Chorus3, 4-Feedback, 5-Flanger1, 6-Short Delay, 7-Short DelayFb, 8-Flanger2).
  • Touch Sensitivity: Three settings: Hard, Normal, Soft.
  • Transpose: Allows transposing the natural key of the instrument up or down.
  • Pitch Fine Tuning: Adjustable pitch up to 63 cents and down to 64 cents.
  • Registration Memory: Up to 54 panel registrations, with 9 Memory buttons (M1 – M9) and 6 memory banks. Up to 9 Registrations can be stored in each Memory Bank.
  • USB Disk: Supports Standard Midi files and Panel Registrations Settings.
  • Recording Station: Supports Standard Midi File recording in two systems: Easy Recording (one or two tracks) and Multi Track Recording (up to 5 tracks).
  • MIDI Implementation: Supports Basic Channel (1-16 CH), Default Mode (3), Note Number (9-120), Velocity (Note On/Off), Pitch Bender, Control Change (0, 1, 5, 7, 10, 11, 64, 66, 67, 80, 81, 91, 98, 99, 100, 101, 121, 123), Program Change (0-127), System Exclusive, System Common (Song Position, Select), Real Time Commands (Clock).
  • Auto Power Off: Adjustable time from 20 to 60 minutes, or can be switched off.

Usage Features

  • Getting Started: Turn on the instrument by pressing the Standby ON switch and set the Master VOLUME to the desired level.
  • Headphones: Plug headphones into the PHONE socket for private practice.
  • Bluetooth Audio Connection: Connect wirelessly to a Bluetooth-capable device to play audio through the piano's speakers. Adjust the "Input Level" knob on the connection panel to balance the volume.
  • Playing Demo Songs: Press the DEMO button to play demo songs. Use the VOICE and STYLE SELECTION buttons to start blinking and select different demo categories.
  • Pedal Functions:
    • Soft Pedal: Gives the piano voices a "softer" sound.
    • Sostenuto Pedal: Sustains only the keys held on the keyboard before the Sostenuto pedal is depressed.
    • Sustain Pedal: Depressing this pedal allows all notes played to sound or sing freely, even when the keys are released.
    • Programmable Sustain Pedal (Half Sustain/Expression Pedal): The sustain pedal function can be changed to operate as a Half Sustain or an Expression Pedal, controlling volume.
  • Volume & Tone Controls: Adjust Master Volume, Bass, and Treble.
  • Selecting and Playing Voices (Sounds): The 354 sounds are grouped into Main Sound, Layer Sound, and Left Sound.
    • Main Voice: Plays a single voice over the entire range of the keyboard.
    • Layer Voice: Mixes two different voices together for rich, complex sounds.
    • Left Voice: Allows selecting one sound for the Left part and up to two sounds for the Right part of the keyboard.
    • Use the Data Control Wheel to scroll through sounds and the ENTER button to confirm.
  • Grand Piano Button: Returns the piano to the Grand Piano voice with one button press.
  • Favorite Voice Group: Store up to 25 favorite sounds for quick access.
  • Changing Your Favorite Voice Group: Delete or replace stored favorite sounds.
  • Select The Split Point: Divides the keyboard into two sections, allowing different voices to be played on the left and right sides. The default split point is F3#.
  • Digital Reverb: Adds a reverberation effect, simulating playing in a large room or hall.
  • Chorus Effect: Adds depth and spaciousness to the selected keyboard voice.
  • Touch Sensitivity: Adjust the keyboard's response to your playing dynamics (Hard, Normal, Soft).
  • Transpose: Shift the pitch of the entire keyboard up or down in semitone steps.
  • Pitch – Fine Tuning: Adjust the pitch in finer increments (cents) for precise tuning.
  • Auto Accompaniment Section: Provides 350 accompaniment styles.
    • Auto Chord Recognition: Recognizes chords using the One Finger Note system or the Multi Finger Chord system.
    • Auto Accompaniment Select and Controls: Select and control accompaniment styles.
    • Start/Stop: Starts and stops the accompaniment.
    • Fill In 1 and Fill In 2 – Style A/B Variations: Adds dynamic variations to the accompaniment.
    • Syncro/Key Start: Starts the accompaniment automatically when the first key or chord is pressed.
    • Intro/Ending: Adds an introduction or ending to the accompaniment.
    • Tap Tempo: Sets the tempo by tapping the button.
    • Auto Accompaniment On/Off: Activates or deactivates the accompaniment feature.
    • Auto Setup: Registers all voices, tempos, and settings used with a song.
    • Full Keyboard: Allows playing automatic chords in the full length of the keyboard.
  • Metronome: Provides a click track for practicing. Adjust tempo and volume.
  • Tempo Control: Adjust the tempo of the metronome and accompaniment.
  • Auto Chord – Auto Accompaniment Type: Select between Fingered or Single Finger Mode for chord recognition.
  • Single Finger Mode: Simplifies chord playing by pressing a minimum number of keys.
  • Registration Memory: Store and recall up to 54 panel registrations (voices, styles, and settings).
  • The Lock Button: Prevents accidental changes to accompaniment settings.
  • USB Disk: Play Standard Midi files or load Panel Registrations from a USB thumb drive.
  • Play Midi Files: Play MIDI files stored on a USB thumb drive.
  • Recording Station: Record performances as Standard Midi Files.
    • Easy Recording: Record one or two tracks.
    • Multi Track Recording: Record up to 5 tracks.
  • Function Button: Access various hidden features and settings, including Reverb Level, Pan, Chorus Level, Octave, Play Mode, Speed, Mute Track, Local MIDI, USB MIDI In/Out, Teacher Duet, Sustain Pedal, Bluetooth, Reset, and Auto Power Off.

Maintenance Features

  • Safety Precautions: Read the safety instructions carefully before use. Avoid using near water, excessive moisture, or heat sources. Ensure proper power supply connection. Unplug when not in use for long periods.
  • Care of Instrument: Do not open the case or touch internal circuits. Always switch off power before cleaning. Use a soft, damp sponge with a neutral detergent for cleaning; avoid solvents or alcohol. Do not place near strong electromagnetic fields.
  • Power Supply: Use only the originally supplied power supply.
  • Battery Recharge: If the unit has an internal battery, it may need 3-5 hours to recharge after re-plugging, and replacement after two or three years.
  • Servicing: If the power-supply cord or plug is damaged, objects or liquids fall into the piano, it's exposed to rain/moisture, operates abnormally, or is dropped/damaged, it should be serviced by qualified personnel.
  • Reset Function: Resets the internal volatile memory to restore original factory settings and registrations.
  • Reset – Direct Reset: A quick way to reset the instrument by holding the (+) YES and (-) NO buttons during power-up.
  • Auto Power Off: The instrument can automatically switch off after a period of inactivity (20-60 minutes) to save power. This feature can also be switched off.
