1.0 Product Introduction
1.1 Handling Scientifica equipment – precautions
This section contains important safety information related to general use of the Scientifica
UMS and SliceScope XY Stage (XY Stage). The Scientifica XY Stage is a piece of scientific
equipment and as such requires care when handling.
• Before use, carefully read the instructions, including all warnings and cautions.
• Inspect the product, any cables, and connectors before each use. Do not use any
equipment that appears damaged.
• Do not apply excessive tension to any cables connected to the XY Stage.
• There are no user serviceable parts inside the unit.
• Always disconnect the instrument from the power supply prior to cleaning the system or
performing maintenance work.
Other important safety information appears throughout the manual.
If the XY Stage is not handled and operated correctly according the information
included in this manual this can adversely affect the performance and operation
of your XY Stage and may invalidate your warranty. Scientifica will not
be held responsible for any damages incurred by improper
use of the equipment.
The UMS/SliceScope XY stage must be used with the waterproof membrane
installed to minimise the effect of solution spills. If not used with the protective
membrane the product warranty will be invalidated.
1.2 The Universal Motorised Stage
1.2.1 Product overview
The Universal Motorised Stage (UMS) is a motorised translation stage for moving
microscopes in X and Y. The UMS provides 50 mm of travel in X and Y with 20 nm
electronic resolution. Due to its large load carrying capacity the microscope stage can be
used with almost any Zeiss, Leica, Nikon or Olympus inverted or upright microscopes; a
variant is also available for use with Scientifica’s own Slicescope microscope.
The UMS can be used in conjunction with a number of Scientifica fixed position mounting
options, such as Post and Platforms or the Sliceplatform. The UMS can be used as an
alternative to the Moveable Top Plate or Motorised Moveable Top Plate style mounting
system when the user preference is to keep the sample stationary and move the
microscope.
In addition to the control interface supplied, this device can also be operated by Scientifica’s
free, LinLab Software.
The UMS can be coupled to a motorised Z drive which provides motorised focusing and
allows full remote control of your microscope.
