8 Protection categories
The protection categories are defined according to the EN 62305 standard. A risk
assessment is undertaken to determine which protection requirements are to be
satisfied and in what time period tests should be undertaken.
Safe distance
A safe distance is defined for each protection category. This minimizes the risk of
the lightning protection system flashing over or feeding through to metal
installations or electric installations.
The safe distance needed is calculated using a formula which takes into account:
● Protection class
● Number of conductor lines
● Material, building material
● Length along conductor line or arrester device
● Design of connected and reinforced walls, ceilings, facades, roofs
