Overview

This document serves as an installation and user's guide for Sta-Rite single-speed pumps, manufactured by Pentair. It provides comprehensive information on the safe operation, installation, and maintenance of these pumps, which are designed for swimming pool applications.

Function Description:

Sta-Rite single-speed pumps are designed to circulate water in swimming pools. They are not submersible and are capable of high flow rates. The pumps are equipped with a mechanical seal and are intended for use with permanent swimming pools, and potentially hot tubs or spas where specified. They are not to be used with storable pools. The primary function is to move water through the filtration system, ensuring proper water treatment and circulation.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual outlines several critical technical specifications and installation requirements:

  • Electrical Connection: The electrical motor must be wired by a professional in accordance with all applicable local regulations. A motor security device must be foreseen and tuned to the nominal power of the motor. The supply voltage should be within ±5% of the rated voltage indicated on the motor's nameplate. Single-phase motors should be connected at two specified terminals. For three-phase motors, wiring diagrams are provided for both 3x230V (DELTA connection) and 3x400V (STAR connection). The electrical power line must be fitted with a short-circuit protection device and a residual current device (RCD) with high sensitivity (30mA), protected by a slow-acting fuse or a magnetothermic switch. It is crucial to interrupt the power supply to the cables when connecting the pump.
  • Piping: For improved pool plumbing, using a larger pipe size is recommended. Piping on the suction side of the pump should be the same size or larger than the return line diameter and as short as possible. Pentair recommends installing a valve on both the pump suction and return lines for isolation during routine maintenance. A valve, elbow, or tee in the suction line should be no closer to the front of the pump than five times the suction line diameter. Independent support for pipes near the suction and discharge is necessary to reduce strain on the pump. Only pipe sealants formulated for plastics should be used; petroleum-based products are prohibited. The suction line must be free of air leaks and should always be at least the same size as the pump's suction inlet.
  • Pump Location: The pump should be installed as close as possible to the pool or spa to reduce friction loss and improve efficiency, using short, direct suction and return piping. A minimum distance of 1.5 meters (5 feet) from the inside wall of the pool and spa is required. The pump must be at least 0.9 meters (3 feet) from the heater outlet and should not be installed more than 2.5 meters above the water level. It needs to be in a well-ventilated location, protected from excessive moisture (e.g., rain gutter downspouts, sprinklers). A rear clearance of at least 7.6 cm (3 inches) is necessary for motor removal during maintenance and repair. The pump should not be installed within an outer enclosure or beneath the skirt of a hot tub or spa unless explicitly marked for such installation.
  • Safety Devices: All equipment must be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable local codes and ordinances. Sufficient equipotential bonding (min. 4.5mm²) is required on all metal components of the pool, including the pump, for electrical safety and to reduce corrosion risk. A means for disconnection must be incorporated into the fixed wiring. Electrical controls should not be mounted directly over the pump.

Usage Features:

The guide emphasizes safe and correct usage:

  • Priming: Before starting, the pump strainer should be filled with water to the suction pipe level. The lid O-ring should be lubricated each time it is removed. Ensure the strainer lid is properly closed before energizing the motor. The pump will prime, with priming time depending on suction lift and distance to the pool (typically five minutes). The pump will not lift water more than 2.5 meters.
  • Suction Entrapment Hazard: Users are warned to stay clear of the main drain and all suction outlets due to the high levels of suction produced by the pump. All suction plumbing must comply with the latest codes and standards. Suction covers must be installed at least 1 meter apart and regularly inspected for damage. Damaged or missing covers must be replaced with certified ones. Hair, limbs, or body parts should be kept away from suction covers. Suction outlets can be disabled or reconfigured into return inlets to mitigate risks.
  • Hazardous Pressure: Circulation systems operate under high pressure. During start-up or servicing, air can enter the system and become pressurized, potentially causing violent separation of pump housing covers, filter lids, and valves, leading to severe injury or death. Users must stand clear of all circulation system equipment during start-up.
  • Emergency Shut-off: A clearly labeled emergency shut-off switch for the pump must be in an easily accessible, obvious place, and users must know how to operate it.
  • Water Treatment Products: To avoid damage to pool products, water treatment products (chlorine/pH/pumps/...) should be installed behind other equipment.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the pump:

  • Strainer Basket: The strainer basket should be removed and cleaned weekly. The pump should never be operated without its strainer basket.
  • Warning Pictograms: Visual check monthly, replace if necessary.
  • Water Supply: Check lines and connections monthly, repair any damage immediately.
  • Safety Devices: Visual check monthly, ensure correct installation/refitting.
  • General Condition of the Pump: Visual check half-yearly, look out for any corrosion or damage.
  • Cooling Ribs of Electric Motors: Clean the cooling ribs half-yearly to maintain cooling effect.
  • Electrical Equipment: Check monthly, rectify loose connections or singed cables immediately. All faults must be repaired by a qualified electrician.
  • Preliminary Filter Housing: Check housing for dirt weekly, remove all dirt thoroughly.
  • O-Ring in Preliminary Filter Cover: Visual check half-yearly.
  • Winterizing:
    • Protect the pump from freezing.
    • Remove all plugs and drain the pump and all piping.
    • Store drains and plugs in the strainer basket.
    • Remove the pump to a dry and warm room.
    • Do not wrap the motor with plastic covering as condensation may damage the pump.
    • In installations where the pump cannot be drained, a 40% propylene glycol, 60% water solution will protect it down to -46°C. Other anti-freeze solutions are highly toxic and will damage the pump.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the pump not priming, motor not turning, low flow/low filter pressure, low flow/high filter pressure, and noisy pump. For instance, if the pump does not prime, potential causes include no water in the strainer pot, a loose strainer pot, a damaged lid O-ring, water level below skimmer, clogged strainer/skimmer basket, closed valve in piping system, or air leak in the suction line.

The document also provides information on Pentair's customer service and technical support contacts, as well as details about their training programs to help users gain technical expertise.
