  The upper thread may break due to several reasons: the machine might not be threaded correctly, so rethread it. The thread tension could be too tight; reduce the thread tension. You might be using a thread that's too thick for the needle, in which case you should select a larger needle. Also, check if the needle is inserted correctly (flat side towards the back) or is damaged and needs replacement. Finally, ensure the thread isn't wound around the spool holder pin; if it is, remove the reel and wind the thread onto it.
