Service
Cleaning
General
.
The
7704
Α
s
hould
be
cleaned
as
often
as
operating
conditions
require
.
Accumulation
of
dirt
in
t
he
instrument
can
cause
overheating
and
component
b
reak-
down
.
Dirt
on
components
acts
as
an
insulating
b
lanket
and
p
revents
efficient
h
eat
d
issipation
.
It
also
provides
an
electrical
conduction
path
which
may
result in
instrument
failure
.
The
side
p
anels
provide
protection
against
d
ust
in
t
he
interior
of
the
instrument
.
Operation
without
the
p
anels
in
place
n
ecessitates
more
frequent
cleaning
.
E
xterior
.
L
oose
dust
accumulated
on
the
outside
of
the
7704
Α
can
b
e
removed
with
α
soft
cloth
or
small
b
rush
.
The
brush
is
particularly
u
seful
for
dislodging
dirt
on and
around
the
front-panel
controls
.
Dirt
which
remains
can
b
e
removed
with
α
soft
cloth
dampened
in
α
mild
detergent
and
water
solution
.
Abrasive
cleaners
should
not be
used
.

faceplate
protector,
and
the
CRT
face
with

soft, lint-free
cloth

ampene

enatured
alcohol
.
The
CRT
mesh
filter
(furnishe
d
with
Option

can

cleaned
in
the
following
manner

he
mesh
filter
in

vertical
position
and
brush
lightly
with
α
soft

water-color
b
rush to
remove
light
coatings
of
dust
or
lint
.

Greasy
resi
d
ues
or
dried-on
dirt
can b
e
removed
with

solution of
warm
water
and
α
neutral-pH
liquid
detergent
.
U
se
the
brush
to
lightly
scrub
t
he
filter
.

.
Rinse
the
filter
thoroughly
in
clean
water
and
allow
to
air
dry
.

.
If
any
lint
or
dirt
remains,
use
clean low-pressure
air
to
remove
it
.
Do

ot
use
tweezers
or
other
h
ard
cleaning
tools
on the
filter,
as
the
special
finish
may
b
e
d
amage
d
.

When
not

se,
store
the
mesh
filter
in

lint-free,

ust-proof
container
such
as

plastic
bag
.

nterior
.
Dust
in
t
he
interior
of
the
instrument
should
be
removed
occasionally
due to
its
electrical
con
d
uctivity
under
h
igh-humidity
conditions
.
The
best
way
to
clean
the
interior
is
to
b
low
off
the
accumulated
d
ust
with
dry,
low-
pressure
air
.
Remove
any
d
irt
which
remains
with
α
soft
brush
or
α
cloth
d
ampene
d
with
α
mild
detergent
and
water
solution
.
Α
cotton-tippe
d
applicator
is
useful
for
cleaning
in
narrow
spaces
or
for
cleaning
ceramic
terminal
strips
and
circuit
b
oar
d
s
.
The
h
igh-voltage
circuits,
p
articularly
parts
located
in
the
high-voltage
compartment
and
t
he
area
surroun
d
ing
the
p
ost-deflection
ano
de
lea
d
s,
should
receive
special
atten-
tion
.
E
xcessive dirt
in
these
areas
may
cause
h
igh-voltage
arcing
and
result
in
improper
instrument operation
.
Lubrication
General
.
The
reliability
of
potentiometers,
switches,
and
other
moving
parts
can be
maintaine
d
if
they
are
kept
prop
erly
lubricated
.
However,
over-lubrication
is
as
d
etri-
mental
as
too
little
lubrication
.

kit
containing
the necessary
lubricants
and
instructions
is
available
from
Tektronix,
Inc
.

isual
Inspection
The
7704
Α
s
houl
d
b
e
inspecte
d
occasionally
for
such
defects
as
b
roken
connectiohs,
broken
or
d
amaged
ceramic
strips,
improperly
seate
d
semiconductors,
damaged
or
improperly
installed
circuit
b
oar
d
s,
an
d
h
eat-
d
amaged
parts
.
The
corrective
p
rocedure
for
most
visible
defects
is
obvious
;
h
owever,
p
articular
care
must
be
taken
if
h
eat-
damaged
components
are
found
.
Overheating
usually
indi-
cates
other
trouble
in
t
he
instrument
;
therefore,
it is
important
that
the
cause
of
overheating
b
e
corrected
to
p
revent
recurrence
of
the
d
amage
.
Semiconductor
Checks
P
eriodic
checks
of
the
semiconductors
in
the
7704
Α
are
not
recommended
.
The
b
est
check
of
semiconductor
performance
is
actual
operation
in
the
instrument
.
M
ore
d
etails
on
checking
semiconductor
operation
are
given
under
troubleshooting
.
R
ecalibration
To
assure
accurate
measurements,
check
t
he
calibration
of
this
instrument
after
each
1000
h
ours of
operation
or
every
six
months
if
use
d
i
nfre
q
uently
.
In
addition,
replace-
ment
of
components
may
n
ecessitate
recalibration
of
the
affected
circuits
.
