Operation
Note:Determinetheleftandrightsidesofthemachine

youorbystandersavoidinjury.
Theuseofprotectiveequipment,suchasbutnotlimitedto,
foreyes,ears,feet,andheadisrecommended.
CheckingtheEngineOil
Theengineisshippedwithoilinthecrankcase;however,the
oillevelmustbecheckedbeforeandaftertheengineisrst
started.
Crankcasecapacityisapproximately3.5quarts(3.3l)with
thelter.
Usehigh-qualityengineoilthatmeetsthefollowing
specications:
APIClassicationLevelRequired:CH–4,CI–4orhigher.
Preferredoil:SAE10W–30Alternateoil:SAE5W–30
Alternateoil:SAE5W–30
ToroPremiumEngineoilisavailablefromyourdistributorin
the10W–30viscosity.Seethepartscatalogforpartnumbers.
Note:Thebesttimetochecktheengineoiliswhenthe
engineiscoolbeforeithasbeenstartedfortheday.Ifithas
alreadybeenrun,allowtheoiltodrainbackdowntothe
sumpforatleast10minutesbeforechecking.Iftheoillevel
isatorbelowthe“add”markonthedipstick,addoiltobring
theoilleveltothe“full”mark.DONOTOVERFILL.If
theoillevelisbetweenthe“full”and“add”marks,nooil
additionisrequired.
Important:Besuretokeeptheengineoillevelbetween
theupperandlowerlimitsontheoilgauge.Engine
failuremayoccurasaresultofoverllingorunder
llingtheengineoil.
1.Positionthemachineonalevelsurface.
2.Removethedipstickandwipeitwithacleanrag
(
Figure29).Pushthedipstickintothetubeandmake
sureitisseatedfully.Removethedipstickfromthe
tubeandcheckthelevelofoil.Iftheoillevelislow,
removethellercapfromthevalvecoverandslowly
addenoughoiltoraisetheleveltotheFullmarkonthe
dipstick.Addtheoilslowlyandchecktheleveloften
duringthisprocess.Donotoverll.
Important:Makesurethatthedipstickisremoved
whilellingtheenginewithoil.Whenadding
engineoilorllingoil,there
must be
clearance
betweentheoillldeviceandtheoilllholeinthe
valvecoverasshowninFigure28.Thisclearance
isnecessarytopermitventingwhenlling,which
preventsoilfromoverrunningintobreather.

3.Replacethedipstick.
4.Startandruntheengineatidlefor30seconds,then
shuttheengineoff.Wait30seconds,thenrepeatsteps
2–3.
Important:Checkthelevelofoilevery8operating
hoursordaily.Changetheoilandlterinitially
aftertherst50hoursofoperation,thereafter
changetheoilandthelterevery150hours.
However,changetheoilmorefrequentlywhen
theengineisoperatedinextremelydustyordirty
conditions.
5.Installthellercapanddipstickrmlyinplace.
