Awornordamagedbladeorbedknifecanbreak,and
apiececouldbethrowntowardyouorbystanders,
resultinginseriouspersonalinjuryordeath.
Inspectthebladesandbedknivesperiodicallyfor
excessivewearordamage.
Usecarewhencheckingtheblades.Weargloves
andusecautionwhenservicingthem.Only
replaceorbacklapthebladesandbedknives;
neverstraightenorweldthem.
Onmachineswithmultiplecuttingunits,takecare
whenrotatingacuttingunit;itcancausethereels
intheothercuttingunitstorotate.
BackLappingtheCutting
Units
WARNING
Contactwiththecuttingunitsorothermoving
partscanresultinpersonalinjury.
Keepngers,hands,andclothingaway
fromthecuttingunitsorothermoving
parts.
Neverattempttoturnthecuttingunitsby
handorfootwhiletheengineisrunning.
Usethisprocesstorestorethesharpcuttingedgesto
reelsandbedkniveswhichareneededforgood-quality
grasscutting.
Thisprocesscanonlyremovesasmallamountof
metaltorestorethecuttingedges.Ifthebladeedges
areseriouslywornordamaged,removethecutting
unitandhavethereelsandbedknifegroundagain.
1.Engagetheparkingbrake,lowerthecutting
units,shutofftheengine,andremovethekey.
2.Adjustthereelstothebedknivestoobtainlight
contact.
3.Applyacoatofmedium-gradedetergent-based
carborundumpastetothecuttingedgesofthe
reelswithalong-handledbrush.

5.PresscuttingunitdriveswitchtotheREVERSE
(backlap)positionforaperiodoftime.Listen
tothegrindingaction.
6.OperatethecuttingunitdriveswitchtotheOFF.
Whenthecuttingunitstopsrunning,shutoffthe
engineandremovethekey.
7.Thoroughlycleanthebladeedgesandadjust
thebedknivestothereels.
8.Checkthatathinpieceofpapercanbecut
cleanlyatallpointsalongthecuttingedges
whilerotatingthereelsbyhand.
9.Iffurtherbacklappingisnecessaryrepeatsteps
2through8.
10.Thoroughlycleanoffalltracesofthe
carborundumpastefromthereelsand
bedknives.
