Malfunctions Diagnostics Corrective actions
Seizure: the fall
arrest wire rope
does not slide
in the fall arrest
device (BS)
Cable damaged Immediately stop the manoeuvre
- set the load on the ground,
- withdraw the wire rope from the unit,
- scrap the wire rope and replace it by a wire rope
in good condition,
- send back* the fall arrest device for inspection.
Jaw mechanism
failure
(1) Immediately stop the manoeuvre
- set the load on the ground,
- withdraw the wire rope from the unit,
- send back* the fall arrest device for inspection.
Ballast weight not
correctly positioned
Immediately stop the manoeuvre
- position the ballast weight as instructed in the
lifting installation manual,
- perform functional checks on the fall arrest device
as instructed in §9.
Wire rope entry
or exit holes are
obstructed or soiled
Immediately stop the manoeuvre
- set the load on the ground,
- withdraw the wire rope from the unit,
- clean the wire rope holes on the unit,
- reinstall the wire rope in the unit,
- perform functional checks on the fall arrest device
as instructed in §9.
No locking action:
BS fall arrest
device does not
lock
Jaws worn or seized,
or BS stirrup pin or
return spring broken
See corrective action (1) above.
Wire rope worn See corrective action (2) above.
Sliding of roller on
wire rope
Roller seized See corrective action (1) above.

12. Prohibited improper uses
Safe installation and use of your fall arrest device
will be ensured by following the instructions
given in this manual. You should however refrain
from the following.
Do not:
secure the fall arrest device by any means
other than that recommended in this manual,
install or use the fall arrest device using a
damaged wire rope,
use the fall arrest device on a lifting or pulling
installation for which the working load limit
exceeds the working load limit of the fall arrest
device,
use the fall arrest device without rst having
completed the checks described in this manual,
use the fall arrest device for any operation
other than those for which it is intended, or
install the device in any way other than that
described in this manual,
apply a load, other than the ballasting weight,
to the slack strand of the fall arrest wire rope,
use the fall arrest device in an explosive
environment (device not compliant with ATEX
directive) or use the device in any highly
corrosive environment,
use the fall arrest device at temperatures less
than -10°C or greater than +50°C,
use any other means for operating other than
the stirrup or handle on the BS fall arrest
device,
