Using the machine exceptionally for seeding only
When a fertilizer is not used, shift the middle wall of the hoppers to front position in order to enlarge the
capacity of the seed hopper.
If you want to ensure, e.g. because of the risk of soil drying, that the seeds are placed in the deepest
furrows, you can sow them through the fertilizer hopper. In that case you should also perform a calibration
test by using the fertilizer feeder and a calibration test chute. Note also, that the seeds may not be able to
pass through the fertilizer sieves. In that case you must remove the sieves.
To achieve maximum seeding power, both the hoppers can simultaneously be used for seeding. Note that
the calibration test must be performed for both of the feeders, and the total of the sums from both tests
forms the result representing the seeding volume.
Note, that in the above-mentioned exceptions, the seeding tables provided with the machine do not apply.
Using the machine for fertilizing only
Tume Nova Combi can also be used only for spreading fertilizer. The fertilizer is then loaded into either the
fertilizer hopper or the seed hopper, or both. Most of the instructions given in the previous chapter apply also
for spreading fertilizer only.
Please note, when loading the entire machine with fertilizer, that it is normally heavier than seeds. Do not
load the hoppers completely full, and adhere to the maximum allowable gross weights defined in the
technical specifications.
4. GENERAL SEEDING INSTRUCTIONS
Selecting the seeding depth
Nova Combi has double disc coulters with different diameters on the right and left disc. The smaller disc
defines the seeding depth, and the larger disc cuts a slightly deeper furrow for the fertilizers.
When selecting the seeding depth, the requirements of the particular seed in question and soil humidity
conditions must be considered. The correct seeding depth for the seeds you are planting should be
checked in good time, so that the seeding can take place when the humidity in that particular depth is
suitable. The suitable depth for small seeds usually varies between 1-3 cm, and for common crops the
seeding depth is usually between 4-5 cm. Always avoid seeding too deep. On the other hand, seeding
too shallow may cause problems in covering the seeds.
It is important to make sure that the smaller disc of Nova Combi reaches down to the humid soil. If the
seeding depth is too shallow, seeds may end up in dry soil, which will prevent them from germinating.
Correct seeding time
The correct seeding time is based on observing the soil humidity and temperature, as well as the
prevailing weather and weather forecasts. The optimal seeding time depends on the soil type and the
crop you are planting, so that it is impossible to give any general guidelines.
The soil at the seeding depth should be tillable, but sufficiently damp. The soil is too wet for planting, if it
packs into hard clods.
The seeding time of crops that are sensitive to frost may have to be postponed despite favorable soil
humidity conditions according to prevailing of expected weather conditions.
If zero tillage is applied and the soil is neither tilled in autumn nor in spring, the spring planting should take
place approx. 7-10 days later than when planting in tilled soil, because of the isolating and light reflecting
properties of vegetable remains.
