Heating water buffer storage unit
The heating water buffer storage unit
ensures rapid heating up in the morning
and that sufficient heat is drawn under all
operating conditions.
Calculate the required contents of the
heating water buffer storage unit using
the adjacent formula:
Sizing basis acc. to EN 303−5.

Deduct rooms which are temporarily
unheated (guest rooms, public rooms,
weekend accommodation etc.) from the
calculated heat demand.
Please note
According to the 1st BlmSchV, a storage
volume of 25 l/kW rated boiler output
must not be exceeded.

Example  calculation for sizing a heating water buffer storage unit
Example 1 for a building heat demand of 22 kW
Semi−detached house with a calculated
heat demand for the building of Q
H
=
22 kW.
Fuel: Common spruce (softwood), length
0.5 m stored for two years
(water content = 25 %)
The system should be operated with a
Vitolig 200 (rated output Q
N
= 26 kW).
Sizing acc. to EN 303−5:
T
B
= 4 h (combustion duration at
rated output in hours)
Q
N
= 26 kW (rated output of
Vitolig 200, 13 to 26 kW)
Q
H
= 22 kW (calculated heat demand of
the building)
Q
min
= 13 kW (lowest output of Vitolig
200, 13 to 26 kW)
This calculation results in a requirement of heating water buffer storage unit contents of at least 768 litres.
Example 2 for a building heat demand of 33 kW
Agricultural building with a calculated
heat demand for the building of Q
H
=
33 kW.
Fuel: Beech (hardwood), length 0.5 m
stored for two years
(water content = 25 %)
The system should be operated with a
Vitolig 200 (rated output Q
N
= 40 kW).
Sizing acc. to EN 303−5:
T
B
= 5.5 h (combustion duration at
rated output in hours)
Q
N
= 40 kW (rated output of
Vitolig 200, 20 to 40 kW)
Q
H
= 33 kW (calculated heat demand of
the building)
Q
min
= 20 kW (lowest output of Vitolig
200, 20 to 40 kW)
This calculation results in a requirement of heating water buffer storage unit contents of at least 1667 litres.
