What to do if my Westinghouse Portable Generator engine will not start?

  First, refuel the generator if it is out of fuel. If the generator was stored without treating or draining gasoline, or refueled with bad gasoline, drain the gasoline tank and refuel with fresh gasoline. Also, check and clean the air filter if it's dirty. If the low oil LED is illuminated, turn the battery switch off and add engine oil. If the spark plug is wet with fuel, wait five minutes, turn the fuel selector switch to the propane position, and pull the recoil handle rapidly several times. If it still doesn't start, remove and dry the spark plug. Finally, gap or replace the spark plug if it's faulty, fouled, or improperly gapped, and then reinstall it. Also ensure that the CO sensor has not been removed or modified, and return it to its original configuration if it has.

  The engine may lack power if the air filter is restricted, so clean or replace it. Stale gasoline can also cause this, especially if the generator was stored without treating or draining the gasoline, so drain the fuel tank and refuel with fresh gasoline.

  Frost can form on the propane tank or regulator if the tank's temperature drops below the dew point, especially in humid conditions. If all propane fuel handling equipment is functioning normally, no action is needed. If you suspect your propane fuel tank is not equipped with an Overfilling Prevention Device (OPD), discontinue operation immediately and replace the propane fuel tank with a propane tank equipped with a an OPD. If you suspect your propane fuel tank has been overfilled, discontinue operation immediately and return the propane fuel tank to the place of purchase or refilling.

  A propane fuel smell could be due to the fuel regulator or fuel hose and fittings not being securely sealed. Use a soap solution to check each connection and tighten as needed. The propane fuel regulator vent may also be active, which is normal if the venting is brief. Residual fuel from the carburetor dispersing after operation can also cause a smell, but this is normal and requires no correction.

  Poor performance or stalling on propane can occur if the propane fuel line is kinked or crushed, so inspect the propane fuel line and remove any kinks or obstructions. Also, ensure the fuel selector valve is properly positioned by rotating it fully until the pointer is directly in line with the desired fuel. If gasoline was not purged from the carburetor before switching to propane, close the propane fuel tank valve, move the fuel selector switch to gas, start the engine and allow it to run until the gasoline has been consumed, then begin the propane start up procedure.

  The engine might be shutting down due to several reasons. The fuel level may be low, so refuel the generator. Also, check the engine oil level and add oil if it's incorrect. A dirty air filter can also cause this issue, so clean it. If the gasoline is contaminated, drain the fuel tank and refuel with fresh gasoline.

  If there's no power at the AC receptacles, check if the OUTPUT READY LED is off and the OVERLOAD LED is on. If so, check the AC load and restart the engine. Also, check if the AC circuit breakers have tripped; if they have, inspect the AC loads and reset the circuit breakers. Another possibility is a faulty power tool or appliance, in that case replace or repair the tool or appliance, then stop and restart the engine.
