PREPARATION FOR USE
UNPACKING
Check apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly
assembled
Inspection
The following inspection procedure is recommended before
use:
1. Check the face piece for cracks, tears and dirt. Be certain
the face piece, especially the face seal area, is not distorted.
The material must be pliable not stiff.
2. Examine the in
halation valves for cracks or tears. Lift
valves and inspect valve seat for dirt or cracks.
3. Ensure that the head straps are intact and have good
elasticity.
4. Examine all plastic parts for signs of cracks or fatigue.
5. Remove the exhalation valve cover and examine the
exhalation valve and valve seat for signs of dirt, distortion,
cracks or tears. Replace the exhalation valve cover.
6. Examine filter sealing area (Figure 1) for distortion or
dirt/particulate that could prevent filters from sealing to the
respirator.
7. If present, ensure the speaking diaphragm is securely
inserted in the facepiece and the speaking diaphragm film is
intact.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
See appropriate user instructions for assembly instructions
(eg. 3M filter leaflet)
FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Adjust head cradle size as needed to fit comfortably on
head.
2. Place the respirator over the nose and mouth, fitting it
comfortably on the bridge of the nose, then pull the head
harness over the crown of the head. See Fig. 2.
3. Take a bottom strap in each hand, place the straps at the
back of the neck and hook the straps together. See Fig. 3.
4. Pull the ends of the straps to adjust the tightness,
beginning with the adjustment points on the head cradle and
then moving to the adjustment points at the back of the neck.
Do not over-tighten to the point where the faceseal becomes
deformed. Head Harness/neck strap tension may be
decreased by squeezing the buckle tabs on the harness.
5. Perform a positive and/or negative pressure user seal
check each time the respirator is donned.
Seal Check
Negative Pressure User Seal Check
Lightly press the seal check button and inhale gently (Figure
4). If you feel the facepiece collapse slightly and pull closer to
your face with no leaks between the face and facepiece, a
proper seal has been obtained.
If faceseal air leakage is detected, reposition respirator on
face and/or readjust tension of straps to eliminate air leakage.
Repeat the user seal check until a proper seal is obtained.
Positive Pressure User Seal Check
Cover the opening in exhalation valve cover with hand and
exhale gently (Figure 5). If facepiece bulges slightly and no
air leaks are detected between your face and facepiece, a
proper seal has been obtained.
If faceseal air leakage is detected, reposition respirator on
face and/or readjust tension of straps to eliminate air leakage.
Repeat the user seal check until a
proper seal is obtained.
If you CANNOT achieve a proper fit DO NOT enter the
hazardous area.
Fit Testing
It is recommended that wearers should be fit tested in
accordance with AS/NZS 1715.
For information regarding fit testing procedures, please
contact 3M.
HF-800SD only
Please use a HF-800-03 Quantitative Fit Test Adapter if
performing a quantitative fit test.
Qualitative Fit with the 3M™ Qualitative Fit Test Apparatus
FT-10 or FT-30 can be conducted using any of the compliant
particulate filters.
DOFFING
Do not remove the face piece, or filters until you have
vacated the contaminated area.
1. Release the tension on the head straps.
2. Carefully lift face piece off the face and remove the
respirator by lifting up and away from the face.
Replacement Parts Instructions
Respirator components, especially exhalation and inhalation
valves should be discarded and replaced with new parts
when damaged If disposal of parts is required this should be
undertaken in accordance with local health and safety and
environmental regulations.
3M™ Head Harness Assembly & Valve Cover Replacement
1. Remove Head Harness Assembly by using your thumb to
pull down on the head harness assembly until it clears the
bottom of the facepiece, then lift the head harness assembly
away from the facepiece. (Figure 6).
2. Replace Head Harness Assembly by positioning the peg
on the facepiece into the notch at the top of the head harness
assembly (Fig. 7 - 1). Press the bottom of the head harness
assembly into the facepiece (Fig.7 - 2). When properly
engaged, an audible snap should be heard.
Exhalation Valve Replacement
1. Remove head harness as described in the previous
section.
2. Remove the exhalation valve from valve seat by grasping
the valve and pulling the valve stem out of the valve seat
(Figure 8).
3. Replace valve by aligning the valve stem with the hole in
the centre of the valve seat. Press the valve post through the
hole in the valve seat. Be certain valve is fully engaged
through valve post and lays flat against the valve seat.
4. Replace Head Harness Assembly as described above.
NOTE
Conduct a negative pressure user seal check to ensure
exhalation valve is functioning properly.
Inhalation Valve Replacement
The inhalation valve is located on the inside of the facepiece
above the exhalation valve. The inhalation valve should be
inspected before each respirator use and during cleaning.
Replace whenever valve is damaged or lost.
1. Remove existing valve(s) by grasping valve and pulling
valve off the centre post.
2. Replace valve by aligning the valve stem with the hole in
the centre of the valve seat (Fig.9). Press the valve post
through the hole in the valve seat (Fig. 10). Be certain
valve(s) is fully engaged through valve post(s) and lays flat.
Speaking Diaphragm Removal/Replacement
To Remove: Turn speaking diaphragm a quarter turn
counter-clockwise, and push the speaking diaphragm inward
from the outside of the facepiece. To install: Align the
speaking diaphragm with the guides on the facepiece, and
turn clockwise a quarter turn.
CLEANING AND DISINFECTION
Cleaning is recommended after each use.
