p.48
To activate the Rec&Play BLUE functions, press the blue [shift]
button while transitioning to a new [MainSelector] position,
hold it for one second after the position has been reached.
In BlueRec (p.23), Cantar plays up to eight tracks from the
internal or external drive while it records a selection of these
tracks (routed through the digital inputs), along with the
'live' audio coming through the analog inputs.
Two operating modes are available in the BLUE-BRWS 21
menu.
Live mode
The TC, scene & take IDs, comments, and track-names are
those of the 'live' take. We identified two main applications
for the live mode:
• Classic playback: telephone call, background music or
wild sounds stored in play-cards (p.24) are played and re-
recorded (or not) during the 'live' recording.
• ADR-1: known as 'hear it/say it' this function lets the ac-
tor record his replacement dialog right after listening to his
former lines followed by a 'say it' buzz.
In live mode the 'live' file (the one being recorded) and the
playback file carry a different TC and a link, called a ‘Link-
ing-Trio’, is created between the two files This Linking-Trio
is stored in the iXML of the live file. It stores the TC (1) and
the filetag (2) of the play-back sound along with the current
TC (3) of the live file. Linking-Trios are used later in the Avid
MC to link & sync the playback sounds with the live ones.
A message, ‘Played letag(s) AB1234, XY9753’ appears in
the comment line of the PDF Sound-Report, it helps the editor
find the original tracks by supplying the filetags to be used
in the file search.
Do not forget to send your original files to the editor!
Because of the sub-frame accuracy of the Linking-Trios, and
the ‘command' to ‘play' zero delay, Cantar outperforms the
External Player/Music-Slate couple.
Clone mode
In clone mode a new filetag is attached to the 'live' file (you
will never run the risk of erasing the master). The play back
and the 'live' file will carry the same TC and metadata.
We identified three main applications for the clone mode:
• Remix: you make a copy of the original iso tracks and
perform a new mixdown with the onboard mixer or the Can-
tarem. Remix also lets you insert a simultaneous translation
of the dialog.
• ADR-2: while listening to the guide track (text or prere-
corded music), the performers record their dialog or song
(alongside the guide track) on the other tracks. The TC of
the played file can be sent through the LTC-output to a video
camera or chasing VTR.
• Re-recording: with its short 0.4 msec 'Mic to Phones' la-
tency, Cantar is good at incremental recording, i.e. adding
one track while listening to the previous track(s) to produce
'packs' of eight tracks which are easy to stack later because
of their identical TCs.
Rec&Play performing:
- choose the HDD (internal or external) and the project folder
in which are stored the files to be played.
- attach an index (A to L) to your selected playback files.
- create playcards (up to 51) in each indexed file (playcards
are sections of the playback file).
- prepare the Routing: route your analog inputs to the tracks,
as well as the playback sounds which are internally sent to
the Digi-inputs and routed as such.
- test your routings and your playcards selection by going to
BLUE-TEST before the real Play&Rec done in BLUE-REC.
Playback-file indexing Cantar-X1 & X2
Go to BLUE-BRWS (see p.10), select the audio files needed
for your Rec&Play operation, and convert them into Playback-
files by putting them under indexes A to L (p.25).
A B indexes are reserved for the current day folders of the
current project files, C D E F are reserved for any day of the
current project, G H I J K L are reserved for archives, e.g. wild
tracks, music, etc., stored on external or internal HDD.
Please note that archive Play-files must
be grouped on the same drive (most of
the time an external drive), same project,
same day.
Play-files which are no longer available, e.g. files
stored on a disconnected external disc, carry a 'n.a.' suffix
instead of 'ok'.
Go to BLUE-BRWS.21 'TC mode', se-
lect Live prior to a 'live' mode session
or select Clone A (from A to L) prior to a
'clone' mode session.
