If SAM600 modules are deployed in marshalling kiosks close to the primary equipment in the
field, fiber optic patch panels are recommended to terminate the rugged outdoor cable at the
entry of the marshalling kiosk and use more flexible optical cable for internal connections.
Verify electrical and communication connections.
After installation, verify that SAM600 modules are correctly connected to the other parts of
the protection system. This is done with SAM600 modules and all connected circuits de-
energized.
Verifying VT circuits
Check that the wiring is in strict accordance with the supplied connection
diagram. Correct possible errors before continuing to the test circuitry.
Execute the following steps for testing the circuitry:
• Polarity check
• VT circuit voltage measurement (primary injection test)
• Earthing check
• Phase relationship
• Insulation resistance check
Unused VT terminals must be short circuited to ground.
The polarity check verifies the integrity of circuits and phase relationships. The check must be
performed as close to the SAM600 module as possible.
The primary injection test verifies the VT ratio and the wiring all the way from the primary
system to the SAM600 module. Injection must be performed for each phase-to-neutral circuit
and each phase-to-phase pair. In each case, voltages in all phases and neutral are measured.
Verifying CT circuits
Check that the wiring is in strict accordance with the supplied connection
diagram. Correct possible errors before continuing to the test circuitry.
The CTs must be connected in accordance with the circuit diagram provided with SAM600-CT,
both with regards to phases and polarity. The following tests shall be performed on every
primary CT connected to SAM600-CT:
• Primary injection test to verify the current ratio of the CT, the correct wiring up to
SAM600-CT and correct phase sequence connection (L1, L2, L3, and L4).
• Polarity check to prove that the predicted direction of secondary current flow is correct
for a given direction of primary current flow.
• CT secondary loop resistance measurement to confirm that the current transformer
secondary loop DC resistance is within specification and that there are no high resistance
joints in the CT winding or wiring.
• CT excitation test in order to confirm that the current transformer is of the correct
accuracy rating and that there are no shorted turns in the transformer windings.
Manufacturer’s design curves must be available for the current transformer to compare
the actual results.
