APPENDIX E:
DHCP
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP is a protocol which describes how a
computer can obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. This assignment usually occurs when the DHCP
configured machine boots up, or regains connectivity to the network. The DHCP client sends out a query
requesting a response from a DHCP server on the locally attached network. Most home router/firewalls are
configured in the factory to be DHCP servers for your home network.
GATEWAY
A Gateway is a node on a network that serves as an entrance to another network. The Gateway receives all
packages which have to be sent „out‟, and takes care of further transport of these packages to the remote
receiver, in the PSTN2 IP‟s case the RC-4001 IP receiver card. Replies to sent messages, such as the
reception kiss off message sent by the receiver card, are forwarded to the PSTN2 IP by the Gateway. The
Gateway‟s IP address has to be programmed in the PSTN2 IP. A gateway is also an earlier term for router,
though now obsolete in this sense as router is commonly used.
IP ADDRESS
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number that devices use in order to identify and
communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP). Any
participating network device - including router, computers, time-servers, printers, and some telephones -
must have its own unique address.
A gateway, such as an ADSL modem with an integrated router, uses two IP addresses: one IP address used
on the LAN side (within a home‟s or office local network) and an IP address on the WAN side, used to
make a connection with the Internet provider. The IP address on the WAN side is unique and can be reached
from the Internet.
Since the number of IP addresses is limited to the 32 bit digit, dynamic IP addresses are used. When
dynamic IP addresses are used, an IP address is provided by the Internet Provider each time the modem logs
in. When the modem logs in again, a new IP address is given. The PSTN2 IP can be connected to a modem
which uses dynamic IP addresses, the RC-4001 IP receiver card must be set to a static IP address.
LAN
A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a small local area, like a home, office, or
small group of buildings such as a home, office, or college. Current LANs are most likely to be based on
switched Ethernet or Wi-fi technology running at 10, 100 or 1,000 Mbit/s (1,000 Mbit/s is also known as 1
Gbit/s).
MAC ADDRESS
Short for Media Access Control address, a hardware address that uniquely identifies each device in a
network. The MAC address makes sure the devices in the network can communicate with each other. Most
of the times, the address is fixed by the producer. A MAC address is always shown in a hexadecimal form,
e.g. 00:0C:6E:D2:11:E6. The last 6 digits of the unique MAC address of the ALPHACOM XL acan be
found on a sticker on the pcb board.
