Overview

The AMREL SPS Series Medium Power DC Power Supplies are designed to provide a comprehensive solution for various power supply needs, catering to a wide range of applications from research and development to industrial process control and automatic test systems. These power supplies are available in multiple power ratings, including 5kW, 10kW, and 15kW in a 3U chassis, and 20kW, 25kW, and 30kW in a 6U chassis, offering a broad selection of models to suit diverse requirements.

Function Description:

The SPS Series power supplies are engineered for precision and programmability, making them suitable for R&D, test and measurement, process control, power bus simulation, and power conditioning. They offer stable and accurate voltage and current regulation, which is crucial for sensitive applications such as battery charging, ultracapacitor testing, and fuel cell research. The units support advanced features like Voltage and Current auto-sequencing (VLIST & ILIST), allowing users to program complex output profiles for automated testing and characterization. With 16-bit digital programming and resolution, these supplies ensure high accuracy and repeatability in output settings.

Extensive protection modes, including Overvoltage Protection (OVP), Overcurrent Protection (OCP), and Overtemperature Protection (OTP), are integrated to safeguard both the power supply and the connected load from potential damage. The system also includes an external shutdown (S/D) and interlock capability, providing additional safety measures in case of hazardous faults. The ability to parallel multiple units, up to 150 kW, allows for scalability to meet higher power demands as requirements evolve, while maintaining a modular design for investment protection.

Usage Features:

The SPS Series power supplies offer flexible control options, including both local and remote operation. For local control, the front panel features a keypad and a real-time encoder, providing precise and on-the-fly adjustment of voltage and current settings. The 20x2 VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) ensures easy-to-read and accurate display of constant voltage and constant current settings and values, as well as digital OVP, OCP, ILIST, and VLIST displays for quick function recognition. The multi-functional front panel keypad allows for high-resolution control of these parameters.

For remote operation, the power supplies are equipped with a multitude of computer interfaces, including GPIB, RS-232, USB, and Ethernet, making them ideal for system integrators and ATE (Automatic Test Equipment) applications. They support Standard Commands for Programmable Instrument (SCPI) commands and come with LabVIEW and LabWindows drivers, simplifying integration into automated test environments. The embedded Ethernet and USB interface options eliminate the need for external interface converters, streamlining connectivity.

External analog programming and monitoring capabilities provide precision control for production facilities utilizing PLCs or analog controllers, as well as for precision process control applications like ion beam steering or plating. Remote sense functionality compensates for measurement errors caused by voltage drops across load lines, ensuring accurate voltage delivery at the point of load. The units also support convenient and robust automated testing with four-step profiles, each with 32 step points, enabling complex test sequences.

Maintenance Features:

The SPS Series is designed with ease of maintenance in mind to minimize downtime and reduce operational costs. A key maintenance feature is closed-case calibration for the digital controls. This allows for calibration without needing to open the unit, which significantly reduces maintenance time and effort, thereby increasing the return on investment.

The units also support in-field firmware upgrades via GPIB, RS-232, USB, and Ethernet interfaces. This capability ensures that the power supplies can be kept up-to-date with the latest software enhancements and can adapt to new and dynamic system applications without requiring the unit to be sent back for service. This flexibility helps prevent downtime and ensures long-term usability.

Diagnostic functions are provided through the LCD display, which shows various messages indicating the status of the unit and any potential faults. Messages such as FLT (General fault for Over Temperature/Module Fault), OCT (Over Current Trip), OVT (Over Voltage Trip), ESD (External Shut Down), and RMT (Digital Remote Operation) help users quickly identify and troubleshoot issues. In Master/Slave Mode, the master unit displays the total voltage and current read back of all connected units, and alarms will latch until cleared by the PROT/CLEAR button or command, aiding in fault diagnosis and resolution. The design emphasizes reliability and quality, contributing to a longer operational life and reduced need for frequent maintenance.
