4.2.4 Measurement mode
A soil stiffness measurement can be carried out at any point dur
-
ing compaction.
The range for correct measurement of the k
B
value generally cor
-
responds to the range for a standard plate loading test.
Optimal measured values are achieved with a completely flat
base plate. Contact of the base plate with the respect to the soil
can be improved by moving the machine lightly back and forth at
the control arm.
•
Press button (2); the machine stops. Indicated on the display
is a value between
•
#50 (reverse) and
•
$50 (forward).
•
For measurement, the machine must be set to point compac
-
tion:
•
Turn the drive lever in the direction of the arrow until the in
-
dication is 20 (point compaction). The direction of the arrow
indicates the direction of the drive lever.
•
The indication k
**
appears for about 3 seconds in the display.
A numerical value (k
B
value
1)
) of the soil stiffness is subse
-
quently displayed, which indicates the degree of compaction.
•
Allow the value to be indicated for about 20 – 30 seconds.
•
Operation can be continued by pressing one of the buttons:
Button 1=Automatic mode
Button 2=Manual mode
1)
The indicated k
B
value represents the soil stiffness. The soil
stiffness is a factor for determining the soil bearing capacity.

Important
For technical reasons, measurements can only be
made with the hydraulic oil in a warm condition. Check
the temperature by touching the hydraulic tank. The
tank should be hand-warm (min. 30°C).
Direct contact with the machine during k
B
value mea
-
surement must be avoided.
To ensure maximum measuring accuracy:
•
Factory calibration should be carried out annually.
•
The rubber pads must not be damaged.
For quality assurance purposes, measurement of the
k
B
value must be calibrated with a static or dynamic
plate loading test.
