9.8 Systems administration
9.8.1 Hardware
The VIA Freeze™ unit is powered by an iMX6 ARM microcontroller running an Embedded
Linux operating system. The system has an integrated SATA hard drive that is used to
boot the OS and store all system information.
9.8.2 Operating system, Boot process and Sys Admin access
The operating system is Ubuntu 14.04 Long Term Support. The desktop environment is
LXDE.
The software of the system can be separated into 3 distinct areas;
1. Ubuntu OS
2. Asymptote Software dependencies
3. Asymptote Proprietary Software
The boot process goes through the following distinct steps to present the UI to the user;
4. uBoot
5. Linux Kernel loading and booting
6. Standard LXDE boot process
7. Upstart processes to load Asymptote Backend processes
8. Upstart process to load Asymptote Frontend UI
The Frontend UI is displayed in a Firefox Web browser run in full screen Kiosk as an
upstart process.
The easiest way to gain access to the Linux environment, is to either SSH into the system
via the IP address (reported in the Engineering Page), with user: Ubuntu, Pass: Asymptote,
or to open a terminal on the local VIA Freeze™ system by CTL-ALT–T on a USB keyboard.
On the local system;
$sudo service stop firefox
