Audi braking guard
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
Fig. 103 Ins t rumen t cluste r: approach warn ing
Braking guard uses radar sensors and a video
camera . It also functions within the lim its of
the system when adapt ive cruise control is
switched off .
What can braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes sud-
denly or if your own vehicle is traveling at a
high speed and approachi ng a vehicle up
ahead that is moving more slowly . Braking
guard does not react if it cannot detect th e
situa t ion.
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead f or a long time. If
the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will
not be able to
avoid a coll ision. The indicator
light
I in the display comes on .
- The
approach warning is given when a de-
tected vehicle up ahead in your lane is
mov -
ing much more slowly than you are or if it
brakes sharply. W hen this warning is given,
it may only be possible t o avoid a collisio n
by swervin g or braking sharply. The indicator
light
I and indicator in the disp lay wi ll warn
you about t he danger ~
fig . 103. You will al-
so hear an acoustic signal.
If you do not react fast enoug h or do not react
at all to t he situ at ion, braking guard will inte r-

wi ll appear.
- If a coll ision is imm inent, t he syst em wi ll
fi rst provide an
acute warning by briefl y and
sharply applying the brakes.
- If you do not react t o the acut e warning,
braking guard can brake w it h increasing
force wit hin the lim its of the system . This
reduces the vehicle speed in the event of a
colli sion.
- The system can initiate maximum braking
short ly before a collision
ll. Full deceleration
at high speeds occurs only in vehicles with
adapt ive cruise control and side assist (pre
sense plus) .
- If the brak ing guard senses that you are not
brak ing hard enough w hen a coll ision is im-
m inent, it can increase t he braking fo rce.
- The pre sense f unctions also engage whe n a
collision is imm inent

Which function s can be controlled?
You can switch braking guard and the dis-
tance/approach warning on or off in the MMI

A WARNING
-
Lack of attentio n can cause collisions, oth-
er accidents and serious personal inju ries.
The braking guard is an assist system and
cannot prevent a collision by it self . The
driver must always int ervene. The dr iver is
always responsible f or braking at t he cor-
rect t ime.
- Always pay close atte nt ion to tr affic,
even when th e braking guard is switc hed
on. Be ready to int ervene and be ready to
take comp lete contro l w henever necessa-
ry. Always keep the safe and legal dis-
tance between your vehicle and vehicles
up ahead.
- Braking guard works within limits and
w ill not respond outside the system lim-
its, for examp le w hen approachi ng a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle ..,.
