St eering lock
The steering locks when you t urn the engine
off using the
I S TAR T ENGINE STOP ! button
and open the driver 's door . The locked steer-
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergenc y off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R, Dor S posi-
tions . The engine stops if you press the
I S TART ENGINE STOP ! button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/h) .
.&_ WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve-
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not quaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injur ies.
- For safety reasons, you shou ld always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P. Otherwise, the vehicle could inad-
vertent ly roll away.
- After t he engine has been switched off,
the radiator f an can continue to run for
up to 10 mi nutes - even with the ignition
switched off.
It can also switch on again
after some time if the coolant tempera-
ture rises as the result of a heat buildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compartment is addit ionally heated by
the sun's rays.

Do not stop the engine immed iate ly after
hard or extended dr iving . Keep the engine
running for approximately two minutes to
prevent excessive heat build-up.

This message appears and a warning tone
sounds if you open the driver's door when the
ignition is switched on.
Press brake pedal t o start engine
This message appears if you press the
I START ENG I N E ST OP I button to start the en-
gine and do not depress the brake pedal. The
engine can only be st arte d if t he brake pedal
is depressed.
I!! I s key in th e vehicle?
If the indicator light turns on and the mes-
sage appears, the remote control key was re-
moved from the vehicle whi le the engine was
run ning. If the ignition key is not in the vehi-
cle you will not be able to switc h on the igni-
tion or rest art t he engine after it has been
switched off. You will also not be able to lock
the vehicle from the outsid e.
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This dr iver message appears for safety rea-
sons if the transmission has not been shifted
to the P position when you switc h the ign ition
off . Move the selector lever to the P posit ion .
Otherwise the vehicle is not protected from
rolling and cannot be locked.
fl Key is not recognized. Hold back of key

sage appea rs, there is a malfunct ion

Turn off ignition before leaving car. Battery
is discharging
This message appears if t he driver's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switched on . Al-
ways switch off the ign it ion if you are leaving
the vehicle. See also
