Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving parts.
In order to provide effec t ive lubrication and
cooling of internal engi ne components, all in-
t ernal com bustion engines consume a certa in
amount of oil. Oil consumption var ies from
engine to engine and may change significant ly
over the life of the engine. Typica lly, engines
with a specified break-in period (see
<=>
page 207) consume more oil during the
break-in period than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized.
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil con-
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oi l, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road condit ions. Further fac-
tors are the amount of oil dil ution from water
condensation or fuel residue and the oxida-
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump-
tion may increase over t ime unt il replacement
of worn componen t s may become necessary.
W ith all these variables coming into play, no
standa rd rate of oil consumption can be es-
tablished or specified. There is no alterna ti ve
to regular and frequen t checking of t he oi l lev-
el, see
Note .
If the yell ow engine oil level warn ing symbol
in the instr umen t cluste r
II lig hts up, you
should check t he oil level as soon as possible
<=>page 236 or ¢ page 237 . Top off the oi l at
your earliest convenience <=> page 23 7.
.&_ WARNING
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all
WARNINGS
c::> ..&. in Working in the engine
compartment on page 231 .
(D Note
Driving with an insufficient oi l level is like-
ly to cause severe damage to the engine.
-
(D Tips
- The oil pressure warning display. is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, pref-
erably each time you refuel , and always
before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impression your engine
consumes excessive amounts of oil, we
recommend that you consult your Audi
dealer to have the cause of your concern
prope rly diagnosed. Keep in m ind that
t he accurate measurement of oil con-
sumption requ ires great care and may
take some t ime. Your Audi dealer has in-
struct ions about how to measure oil con-
sumption accurately.
Checking the engine oil level
Applies to vehicles : wit h oil level indicator
Fig. 201 Disp lay: oil leve l indicator
.,. Park your vehicle on a level surface.
.. Shut the engine off w hen it is warm.
.. Switch only the ignition back on.
.. Wait approximately two minutes .
.. Select:
!CARI function button > Car systems
contro l button > Servicing & checks > Oil
level.
.. Check the oil level in t he display c::> fig. 201.
Add engine oil if the bar of the oil level ind i-
cato r is near "min"
c::> page 23 7.
Depending on the way the vehicle is dr iven
and the operat ing cond it ions, oil consumption
can be up to 1/2 quart per 600 miles (0 .5 liter
per 1,000 km) . Consumption may be highe r
within the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km).
