If the front passenger airbag dep loys, the Feder -
al Standard requires the airbag to meet the "low
risk" deployment criteria to help reduce the risk
of injury through interaction with the airbag.
"Low risk" dep loyment occurs in those crashes
that take place at lower decelerations as defined
in the electronic control unit

Always remember: Even though your vehicle is
equ ipped with Advanced Airbags, the safest place
for children is properly restrained on the back
seat . Please be sure to read the important infor-
mat ion in the sect ions that follow and be sure to
heed all of the WARNINGS.
A WARNING
To red uce the risk of injury when an airbag in-
flates, always wear safety be lts properly .
- If you are unrest rained, lean ing forward, sit -
t ing sideways or out of pos it ion in any way,
your risk of inju ry is much higher .
- You will also receive serious injur ies and
could even be killed if you are up aga inst the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child seat insta l-
led on the front passenger seat will be ser i-
ously injured and can be killed if the front air-
bag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System .
- Although the Advanced Airbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off t he front
airbag when a rearward-facing child re-
straint has been insta lled on the front pas-
senger seat, nobody can abso lutely guara n-
tee that deployment is impossible in all con-
ceivable situat ions that may happen dur ing
the usefu l life of your vehicle .
- The inflat ing airbag will hit t he child sea t or
infant carrier wit h great force and will
smash the child seat and child against the
backrest , center armrest, door, or roof.
- Always install rearward -facing child re-
straints on the rear seat .
- If you must install a rearwar d fac ing child
seat on the front passenger seat because of

except ional circumstances and the PASSEN-
GER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on
and stay on, immed iate ly install the rea r-
facing child seat in a rear seating pos it ion
and have the airbag system inspected by
your Audi dea ler.
A WARNING
-
If, in exceptional circumstances, you must in-
stall a forward-fa cing child rest raint on the
fron t passenger's seat:
- Always make su re the forward-facing seat
has bee n des igned and certified by its man-
ufacture r for use on a fro nt sea t with a pas -
senge r front and side airbag.
- Never put t he forward-faci ng child restra int
up against or very near t he instr ument pan -
e l.
- Always move the fro nt passenge r seat t o
the hig hest posit ion in the up and down ad-
justment range and move it back to the
rearmost positio n in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as far away from the air-
bag as possible, before install ing the for -
ward-faci ng child restraint .
- Always make sure that the safety belt upper
anchorage is behind the child restraint and
not next to or in front of the child restraint
so that the safety belt will be properly posi-
tioned .
- Make sure that t he
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the time
wheneve r t he ignit ion is switched on.
Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenge r seat in your vehicle has a lot
of very important parts of t he Advanced Airbag
System in it. These parts include the weight -
sensing mat, sensors, wiring, brackets, and
more . The function of th e system in the front
passenger seat is checked by the electronic con-
trol unit when the ign ition is on. The control unit
monit ors the Advanced Airbag System and turns
the airbag indicator light on when a malfunction
in the system compone nts is detected . The func-
t ion of the airbag indicator light is described in
greate r deta il below. Because t he front
