~The front compartment in any vehicle is a
potentially dangerous area. Before perform-
ing work in the front compartment, switch
the ignition off and allow the cooling system
to cool down. Always follow the information
found in > page 229, General information.
— Never open the hood if you can see or hear.
steam or coolant escaping from the front
compartment, because there is a risk that
you could be burned. The cooling system is
under pressure. When you no longer see or
hear steam or coolant escaping, you may
open the engine compartment with caution.
= Coolant must not be added if the ifindica-
tor light turns on because doing so increases
the risk of fire.
— Coolant additive and coolant can be danger-
ous to your health. For this reason, store the
coolant in the original container and away
from children. There is a risk of poisoning.

Coolant loss that results in the coolant expan-
sion tank becoming nearly empty primarily in-
dicates that there are significant leaks in the
cooling system, which can lead to further
damage.
— Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. Air could enter the cooling system
and increase the risk of damage. If this is
the case, do not continue driving. See an au-
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.
= If there is any coolant remaining, add addi-
tional coolant. Drive to an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
immediately to have the malfunction cor-
rected. If the i indicator light turns on
again, do not continue driving and switch
the ignition off. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for
assistance.
Ifa large amount (approximately 0.5 qt or
0.5 L) of coolant needed to be added, then
check the coolant level again the next day. If
the coolant level has decreased again, see

an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility for assistance.
= If smaller amounts (0.25 qt or 0.25 L) of
coolant needed to be added multiple times
(up to two times) within two months, visit
an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility because there is a risk
of
damage.
— If there is too much coolant in the expan-
sion tank after adding coolant, drive to an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility as soon as possible to have
the coolant level corrected.

Checking the brake fluid level
» Park the vehicle on a level surface.
» Read the brake fluid level on the brake fluid
reservoir © page 232, fig. 151. The brake fluid
level must be between the MIN and MAX mark-
ings > A\.
The brake fluid level is monitored automatically.
Messages
The following messages may appear depending
on the vehicle equipment:
[EMG / By Brakes: stop vehicle and check brake
fluid level
Stop the vehicle and check the brake fluid level.
