Airbag system
Important things to
know
Importance of wearing safety belts and
sitting properly
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. For
airbags to do their job , occupants must al-
ways properly wear their safety belts and be
in a proper seating position.
For your safety and the safety of your passen-
gers, before driving off, always:
• Adjust the driver's seat and steering wheel
properly

• Adjust the front passenger's seat properly
r=:;page 53 ,
• Wear safety be lts properly ¢ page 101,
• Always properly use the proper child re-
straint t o protect children

In a collision airbags must inflate within the
blink of an eye and with considerable force .
The supplemental airbags can cause injuries if
the driver or the front seat passenger are not
seated properly . Therefore in order to help the
a irbag to do its job, it is important, both as a
d river and as a passenge r to s it properly at all
times.
By keeping room between your body and the
steering wheel and the front of the passenge r
compa rtment, the airbag can inflate fully and
comp letely and provide supp lemental protec-
tion in ce rtain frontal collisions

There is a lot tha t the d river and the passen-
gers can and must do to help the individua l
safety features ins t alled in your Audi work to-
gether as a system.
Prope r seat ing pos ition is important so that
the front airbag on the drive r side ca n do it s
job. If you have a physical impa irment or con-
dit ion that prevents you from sitting properly
on the driver seat with the safety belt properly
fastened and reaching the peda ls, or if you
have concerns with regard to the function or
operation of the Advanced Airbag System,
please contact your author ized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop, or call Audi Customer Re-
lations at 1-800-822-2834 fo r poss ible modi-
ficati ons t o your vehicle.
When the airbag system dep loys, a gas gener -
ator will fill the a irbags, break open t he pad-
ded cove rs, and inflate between t he steering
whee l and t he dr iver and between the instru-
ment pane l and t he fron t passe nger. The a ir-
bags will defla t e immediately after dep loy-
ment so that the front occupants can see
t hrough the windshie ld again witho ut inter-
ruption .
All of th is t akes p lace in the blink of an eye, so
fast that many peop le don't even realize that
t he airbags have deployed. The airbags a lso
inflate with a great dea l of force and nothing
shou ld be in their way when they deploy.
Front a irbags in combination wit h properly
wor n safety belts slow down and lim it the oc-
cupant's fo rward movement . Together they
help to prevent the drive r and front seat pas-
senger fro m hitti ng pa rts of t he inside the ve-
hicle while reducing t he forces acting on the
occupant dur ing t he crash . In this way t hey
help to reduce t he risk of injury to the head
and upper body in the crash. Airbags do not
protect the arms or the lower parts of the
body.
Both front airbags will not inflate in all fronta l
collisions . The t rigge ring of the airbag system
depends on the vehicle dece lerat ion rate
caused by the collision and registered by the
electron ic control unit. If t his rate is below
the reference value programmed into the con -
trol unit , the airbags will not be trigge red,
even t hough the car may be bad ly damaged as
a res ult of t he co llision . Vehicle damage, re-
pair costs or even the lack of vehicle damage
is not ne cessarily an indication of whe t her an
airbag shou ld inflate or not .
