Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
The convertible locking retractor for child re-
straints will be deactiva ted automatically
when the belt is wound all the way back into
the retractor.
" Press the red button on t he safe ty belt bu ck-
le. The bel t tongue will pop out of the buck -
le.
" Guide the safety be lt all the way back into
its stowed pos ition .
Always let t he safety belt retr act complete ly
into its stowed pos it ion . The safety belt can
now be used as an ordinary safety belt with -
out the convert ible locking ret ractor for chi ld
rest raints .
If the conver t ible locking retracto r shou ld be
activated inadve rtently , the safety belt m ust
be unfasten ed and guided comp letely back in-
to its stowed position to deactivate th is fea-
ture. If the convert ible locking retractor is not
deactivated, the safety belt will gradually be-
come tighter and u ncomfo rtable to wea r.

Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To provide a simple r and more practicable way
t o attach th e child restra int on t he vehi cle
seat, Fede ral regulat ions req uire s pecial lower
an cho rages in vehicles a nd devi ces on new
child restra ints to at t ach to the vehicle ancho -
rages.
The combination of th e te t her a ncho rages a nd
th e lower ancho rages is now gener a lly call ed
the
LATCH system fo r "Lowe r Anchorages and
Tethers for Child ren." In Canada, t he terms
"top tether" with "lower unive rsal ancho rag -
es" (or "lower universal anchorage bars") are
used to describe the system.
Forward-facing chi ld restraints manufactured
after September 1, 1999, are requ ired by U.S.
federa l regu lations to comply with new child
head movement performance requirements .
These new pe rforma nce requirements make a
tethe r necessary on most new child seats.
Installing a ch ild restra int that requires a top
tether wit hout one can seriously impair the
performance of the child restra int and its abil -
ity to protect the child in a coll is io n. Insta lling
a chi ld restrai nt that req uires a top tethe r
wit hout the t op tether may be a violat io n of
st ate law.
Child restr aint manufacturers offer LATCH
lower anchorages on t heir child seats with
hoo k-on or push -on con nectors attached to
adjus t able str ap s.
In add ition to t he LATCH lower anchorages,
these chi ld restraint systems usua lly requi re
t he use of tethe r straps t o he lp keep t he chi ld
rest rain t firmly in place.
